Welcome!
Your have come to the place to learn. The RIRs people have on this thread are not like the ones from the Hatcheries. It is good that you are checking here before getting your flock.
A rule of thumb for layers is to have two Hens per egg eater in your family.
I have RIRs from Horstman and @FOGELLY
. Both lines are not aggressive at all. RIRs from hatcheries are the ones most people are describing as being aggressive.
If someone close to you is on this site and you can get chicks from them, they will be wonderful for you as a first flock. Do a lot of reading and preparation first. We are here to help you!
Many of the Breeders on this site will ship chicks.Thank you for being so kind and helpful! I have tried to read a lot but it just leads to mixed or confused information and more questions lol. Okay so now I am torn...I don't know which to get...or if I should get both! Do RIRs go broody? How do I go abouy finding a RIR breeder in my area?
Many of the Breeders on this site will ship chicks.
A lot of RIR do not go Broody so Incubators or a Broody breed like Cochin or silkie is used.
The conflicting information makes more sense when you understand that there are different types of Rhode Island Reds. Standard Bred(Heritage like the ones on this site), Production Reds from Hatchery Stock and Red Sexlinks. They are different in shape and personality.
Standard Bred or Heritage are what our Grand Parents had in their yards years ago.
Nothing wrong with TSC (hatchery re-seller) chicks. I like fast food McDonald's too, on occasion. But I sure don't confuse McDonald's food with eating at a gourmet restaurant or eating grandma's home cooked meals. Both are food, but they have little else in common.I have been starting to understand that little by little. My mom purchased RIRs from TSC this last year. They don't look a thing like what I have been seeing pictured on this thread!
Thanks so much Scott. He is about 95% of what I was shooting for. lolI would say five points. Nice looking boy Jim!!!
Scott
Ha, ha, ha. You just wait a few more weeks. All will be really dark. I don't think you will know sex by color on these. lol The quickest way to tell is their tails, combs/wattles. Also, the legs on the males look like little fence posts at a pretty young age.
Here is my largest 3 week old of the Underwood line reds! I think this is a rooster, and his color on his back is such a deep mahogany! I know it is hard to tell as he is not grown yet, but I am hoping he is looking good. All the chicks seem to be the sweetest and I really want to thank Jim for this line!! Getting spoiled by my 13 yr old too!
Put his tail down completely straight and his back will look longer like other birds. lol Once they get the lift in the tail it makes their backs look shorter. It's kind of hard sometime's to go by a picture but he look pretty well proportioned to me. ???????? One thing, his back look like it has decent with from hackle to tail.
AMEN!! I wish I had found this site before I got my RIR's. I ended up thinking I was getting Grandma's home cooking and bit into McDonald's!! Nasty surprise!! LOL but I have learned a lot and will be getting the right chicks in February.Nothing wrong with TSC (hatchery re-seller) chicks. I like fast food McDonald's too, on occasion. But I sure don't confuse McDonald's food with eating at a gourmet restaurant or eating grandma's home cooked meals. Both are food, but they have little else in common.
