The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Hey Jimmy, thought I'd give you a visual update on the Nelson chicks. They're surviving this bitter cold wave OK. Not the most joyful or active, preferring to hunker and be a bit grumpy, but it's not been above 11 degrees in three days now. Here's the older pullet I showed the other day. I think she bonked her nose flying down from the rafters. Oh Fred I am drooling in anticipation of my start ups from you! These look great! :drool

I have one hen that is laying about every other day but while she is on the roosting bar. She is the lowest of the pecking order. I have her, 2 other hens, and a rooster in the breeding coop that is 6 x 8. There is one nesting box. It has been cold and snowy here. None of these chickens have gone outside willingly. Is it possible that she is scared to come down? If so should I go ahead and pull her out of the pen and isolate her to make sure she is eating. I don't like the idea of isolating in these temps. But I don't want her to go hungry either. The other option would be to provide another nesting box, not the easiest option but doable. Still if she is scared to come down I don't know if she would even use the 2nd box. I can't think of why she would be scared as she has grown up with these chickens since about 8 weeks old. The only thing that has changes is that there are less of them in the breeding pen. I sold some and put the other two roosters in with my pullet (soon to be layers) flock.

And thanks for the feed suggestions earlier, I have gotten more single yolk eggs now. Still about half and half but at least some are single yolk eggs.

Well, I got my Eggs today. The Post Office was kind to me on my Rhodebar shipment but not my HRIR box. I Bought 10 HRIR eggs, seller sent 12, 5 survived the trip.

Mangled Box.

Broken eggs :(

The 5 survivors.

Now I hope they weren't scrambled too much in shipping. Crossing my fingers that at least a breeding pair hatches.

I think priority mail has up to $50 insurance included in the price, but I'm not sure. I'm waiting for a reply from the seller. I'm not sure what they'll do, but hopefully they send a few replacements.

I remember reading a discussion between some people on the net and they said that people have been getting insurance money from the PO for damaged eggs. I do not remember ware I read it.

If i can get to to the PO when someone is there then I'll have to file the claim then. then I can use the money to pay the shipping on the replacements that the seller offered. They said The would ship another batch if I just paid the shipping, but it would probably be best to wait till after the holidays when the PO isn't so busy, so we might have better luck then. I just hope I get a pullet or two to hatch out of the 5 I got today, so I can use them in my rhodebar project. On the plus side I'll know if what I got are going to hatch by the time I get the replacements sent.
