The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

sally. last season I hatched around 150 from 4 hens and 2 cocks .. now with 4 pens to work with I hope to hatch 300+ this year . I culled to 16 pullets and the 4 hens from last year. kept one of my cocks (the other was killed by a predator ) and 6 cockerels .. 4 breeders and 2 backups. but due to a problem with my lgd ( she was locked in a pen and my brother who helps me forgot to let her out one day ) I lost the 2 backup cockerels. mine are from Ron Fogel like yours :)

I'm hoping for 40 with a nice 50/50 split or maybe a few more hens. I really really like my Fogle RIR. I would be hatching a few more this season but family plans are cutting into the hatching season. I'm thinking of hatching some late in the game but I keep remembering Bob saying that chicks hatched out of season did not grow up as nice. So then I talk myself into waiting a year.

I don't usually break out the incubator for another couple of months but this girl is seriously broody so I thought I'd give her a few eggs. My incubator holds 324 eggs but I don't hatch that many at once. I do staggered hatches. Each tray holds 2 racks of (108) eggs. ronniewayne, do you have a cabinet incubator too?

There is a number of the threads on here that I can no longer look at the picture galleries of, this being one of them. Is anyone else experiencing this? I am having the same problem from both at work and at home. I know, I know, what am I doing on here at the office? Stress relief, and I just can't help myself. I need help, an intervention, maybe attend ChickenAA

If you find a Chicken AA please let us know. My DH would probably sign me up.

If I could set all the chicks I wanted in about 3 batches, I would be waiting till the last week of Feb to set the eggs too. I sat down and calculated the chicks being 30 weeks old by Mid Nov or sooner and it turns out that I would want to finish setting eggs before April. Since sometimes the cold sets in in Nov here and sometimes not till the end of Dec, it is hard to estimated the end of hatching season. But I want the hens to be laying before the cold comes and delays their start of laying.

Good idea. I would too if I lived in your part of the country. Being in Florida and a milder climate I can hatch a little later. I have some Heritage Rhode Island Reds that I hatched out last spring/early summer that just recently started laying. The do start laying generally later than most other breeds. Surprisingly the eggs have been good size right from the start. They lay pretty much year round except they do slow way down during their molt. This has been a crazy season weather wise. We have nice warm days then some chilly days. I had birds molt in the fall and I have some molting right now.

That said, most of us, who are regulars, have chicks and/or eggs these next few months, as this is breeding season. Most would be glad to help or point you in the direction of someone who can.

Glad your considering genuine Rhode Island Reds.

Awww Fred, thanks for the vote of confidence. I hope I can live up to the reputation you just put out there for me. Sure will give it my all!

Am very anxious to be swimming in a Large (for me and my amount of land and coop size) flock of these beautiful creatures. Wish I could build a second coop but I think my physical abilities will max out with the current coop... which isn't finished yet and still my beginning flock is doing well. :D

Haha you should see the cockerel doing that decisive foot lift and firm placement down they do but still makes a retreat if granny white comes toward him in response! If she leaves the feed for the other pile he fluffs and shakes in victory and settles his two girls to eat but she won't take the defeat for long and edges back to the first feeder to commandeer it.
