The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Thanks! I'm planning on building our coop this spring and I was thinking of getting a Rhode Island White and Red along with a white Rock and barred rock. These would be our first chickens ever. Looking for breeds that don't peck or hurt children. We have a 5 and soon to be 7 year old boys that we are wanting to teach how to take care of animals and learn were eggs come from.

I think you will find that individual birds will have there own personality but for the most part birds that are raised and get alot of interactions with there owners will be really tame.

It has been my experience that RIR roosters that came from a hatchery are not nice. In fact every one of them that we have mistakenly been sent has turned out to be the meanest rooster long before 18 weeks of age.

Now he heritage or SOP bred RIR roosters I have act much more like puppies. They have startled us by running fast towards us when it is feeding time. They will puff up at us if we catch a hen right in front of them but no attacking. And I can turn my back on them and not wonder if I'll get attacked.

We have birds too that are more like pets and will follow us everywhere.

I have never had a mean Heritage APA Red be mean. they are almost a pain because they are always around you under your feet etc. That is why I love them...gentle, kind, easy going, great layers. Just cannot beat them.

There is a utube video that is great and shows how loving chickens can be. Istart my chicken class off with this video. The more the kids handle the birds the more friendly they are to them.

People that buy my Reds are always telling me how nice they are. I went to a swap today and a girl that had bought a cockerel awhile back came by and told me how much she loved him and her kids too.

I have a question about the Ricky Bates line of Rhode Island Reds. I read here that after he passed his son gave Ricky's flock to another breeder. My question.....Are the Rhode Island Reds that his son Jacob is showing and selling his fathers line? In other words did he keep a few birds for himself to continue on his fathers line?

You are right. I just saw this on his web site "I am currently Breeding and Exhibiting Large Fowl SC Light Brown ,SC Dark Brown & SC Buff Leghorns, SC Rhode Island Red Bantams, Quail Belgian D'Anver Bantams, Black Muscovys, Brown African, & Brown Egyptian Geese, & Bronze Turkeys. I Belive in Breeding Quality Not Quanity."

Doesn't Jacob show bantams?

Seems like on the RIRCA club page, that's all I've seen Jacob show.
It also seems to me that Ron Fogle may have gotten the large fowl that were Ricky Bates' former line.
Fred, I have emails in my private page of my web site and in one of the emails it states that when Bob placed his reds they went to Brian, Andre and Greg. Ricky got his birds from Andre and his mother before she started crossing them with a RC. My information does state that Ron did get the birds that Ricky had and did get them from Jacob. These birds as far as I or anyone else can say are the same bloodline birds that came from Bob. I can only state what was written to me by a couple of folks over the years. I have spoken with Jacob a time or two via emails and he has never mentioned keeping any of the large fowl. Not meaning to butt in but thought that this info may help.
