The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Was out looking at some of my pullets (6 months old the 19th of this month) trying to see the brick shape in them and I think this one has it if I am understanding right.

She was

pecking at my shoe. lol They are very dark and for some reason the camera didn't get the true colors.

Another one although the sun washed her out a little.

This one I'm not sure about. I see the brick shape but she has a hump in the tail area.

I really like this one! TRYING to pick out some for my breeders. New to this and trying to learn.

The top is not where you see the brick shape. You see pinched tails here. The side profile is where you see the brick shape.

They should have a brick shape to them with a long flat back with a tail angle of 20* for Males and 10* for the Females.

I like your second and third cockerels pictured. Choosing from photos alone is not good, as we're not there to handle the birds, so I'll just say #2 cockerel first place, and #3 cockerel second place.

Not liking the first K very much. Not much to him. Watch out for exaggerated tails in this line on the males. They can get out of control in a hurry. I do like their flat backs very much. Remember, from above, you want to see the width of the shoulders carried through the hips. You always want to see a protruding, low set front keel as well.

What you're seeing here and did not like in this pullet, and it was a good eye to see this, is the wings are carried too high and too tight. Combine that with a narrow tail and considerable cushion, those puffed up feathers in front of the tail, and you've a candidate for the layer only pen.

Edit to add: But again!! Please do not just take our evaluation of some photos are gospel. We can only see bits and pieces of the birds. Choose your males carefully. Give two males each a turn. Keep careful records of the offspring and see which make the superior chicks. This is a marathon, not a sprint to the finish. In for a year, in for a decade.

THANK YOU Ron!!! OK gotta look at them again from the side. I've got my/our library looking for me a copy of the SOP book until I can get me one of my own. This was very helpful! I'm making notes.

THANK YOU sooooo much Fred!!! The 1st K is a month younger than the other two so he's only 5 months old. I forgot to tell that. Going to have to separate them because they are starting to fight now.
So THAT is what it is with that little pullet. Never even thought about a layer only. DUH I have productions for laying but I guess she would work there to. lol Don't know that I could eat her would be a little hard to do with these. I truly love these birds!
Man you don't know what this means to me! I want to pick the best so I can work towards a good set of birds. So I appreciate your help big time!! I understand what you mean about photo's to. I like that saying! GOOD idea on the records to because I haven't even thought about that! I will have to get me a notebook and some paper and some clear sheets to put pix to. Again thank you sooooo much for your info and help!

It's funny, because I was thinking the same thing! I liked the looks of the second cockerel the most and saw that bit of cushion on that pullet and was drawing the same conclusions.

So often we do that on here and it's kind of fun to find the ones you picked, others liked as well.

I have a couple of pullets I'm breeding this year that carry their wings too high but going to try and breed that right out of them, because they have a lot of other qualities I like. Hoping that breeding them with a male with good wing set and a wide body will produce a better body type on the offspring.

Was out adding on to their pen and had the camera. So I tried getting some side pix of the girls. NEED me some leg bands so I can get them banded.

I really like the looks of this one from the side. I haven't checked measurements etc. It just dawned on me I need to take pix from the side and from the top on the same pullet. duh Don't know WHY my camera washes them out some times because they are darker than this pic shows. Maybe it's the time of day?

This one closest to me looks nice to me. She's got her breast shoved into the mesh cloth in front of her. What about the coloring on the bottom of her wing? That doesn't need to be there does it?

An old friend, Bill Post, aka NYreds taught me that you need to see RI Red type in the brooder. Ok, that sounds impossible, right? Not after awhile. Your eye dials it in when you breed and raise these birds for years.

Look at the cockbird in the avatar photo and then look at that chick "showin'" itself in the middle of the photo. There!!! Right there. That's type, right in the brooder. Hours old and already it is typey as can be. Look at that red brick shape and extended keel. Stories are told, (but you know how old stores go, right?) that the old timers could cull as they took the chicks out of the brooder.

Anyway, hope that helps.

OK so you think this one is a little cockerel? I see what you're saying big time with it and I've never noticed that before. Well actually I guess I have but never thought much of it. I gotta remember this so I can band the one that is like this to just watch it as it grows. Would be fun to do to. DUH I guess I need to go to bed! LOL you said it was in what you said. Just a bit tired tonight.

These are my cockerels and a pullet that took Champions at recent shows. The pictures aren't the best.
This cockerel cut his comb and the cut turned out deeper that I thought after the scab came off so he is now in a breeding pen.

This is another cockerel from the same hatch as the one above.

This is my pullet, just as I took her picture she turned her head towards me. I was trying to get a profile.
