The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

My original Reese birds I got several years ago from a fellow at the Lake City, Florida poultry show (Florida Sunshine Classic). I didn't get the fellows name only that the birds were from the Reese line. I think it has been around 3 years ago now that I bought a quad to add to my flock from Matt at Lake City. Last month I got another cockerel from Matt because my original male died. I have been keeping 2 families for breeding as Bob Blosl had suggested, primarily because that is all the space I have. I also have RC RIW's, RC RIR's and have been breeding for RSL's.
Man Bob sure was knowledgeable about them. Would be AWESOME to have someone like that to tudor you on this wouldn't it? I hate that about yours dying. Hubby and I were just talking about building our breeder pens. GOT to get started on something to get these cockerels separated!

I agree Bob knew his stuff. I had a really fine chick hatch out from my breedings. This chick really stood out from the get go, so I sent a picture to Bob to get his opinion, He liked the chick and thought it had very good potential. He named him Hollywood. I had forgot to shut the pop doors in their coop and sadly one morning I went out and found 14 dead chicks. They were around 2 months old. Hollywood was one of the ones killed. I don't know what killed them but suspect it was a cat because I had seen a cat prowling around here at night and could not find any way a predator could get into their pen and coop except go over their fence. Believe me I kicked myself real hard. I was so mad at myself. Matt and Bob were good friends. Every time I see Matt and his dad I pick their brains. They probably think I'm nuts but I listen to every thing they tell me.

Here is a few of my Cockerels from this year...they are not finished in the tail but getting close.

Thanks Fred...I got started hatching late last Spring and looks like I'm headed the same direction this year. My Reds were hatched very late, like May-June. They are coming along but I'm afraid the will be ready about the same time that show season is over...LOL.

Matt

Matt, you know I mess around with Reds and Rocks, LF and this year is ending as bad as last winter was for the whole time. There is no sense in even trying anything with the weather as it stands. Me surviving and the birds surviving is all we can. This is one reason I like the Knoxville show in early December. I can barely, barely, get the birds mature enough looking at that time. Sigh.

Nothing we can do about it, except complain. Weather that is.

Very pretty Matt. I sure wish I'd known you were at the Show in Columbia because I'd loved to have met you and chatted about our RIR's. Maybe next time.

I really really like the last two. Did you have any of these in the show Matt? Also did you see the pix of mine on pages 878 and 879? Would love to have your advise as well on them if you don't mind.

Oh I'd be doing the same if I could. Be my luck I wouldn't know the questions to ask them.

oh I bet that did kill you! UGHHHHHHHH JUST a few weeks ago the girls (these are productions) wouldn't go into their pen from free ranging and so I told hubby just to let them be and when it got dusk they'd go inside and he could shut the gate then. I was out there doing something, don't remember what but something told me to go check the gate and I could barely see where I was walking by this time. I went to check and sure enough the door was standing wide open. My stomach did a flip and I got inside looking around and really couldn't see anything. Told him to get the light and go check in all the rooms of the pen to make SURE nothing was on the inside before he shut the gate for the night. Nothing was in there with them thank goodness. He'd forgotten to go back and shut it and I'd gotten busy not paying attention if he had or not until I got ready to go in the house for the night. So I can see HOW this can happen but still doesn't make it any less painful. :( So sorry for your loss because I know it killed you. :(

I don't think these birds are as handsome as Matt's but they are all related.
This is the boy I got last month from Matt. The picture is blurry. I took a few pictures and they are all blurry. Maybe because I was shooting into the sun? I thought it was my camera and cleaned the lens but all of the pics I took were blurry but they were all taken into the sun.

This is the son from another cock I got from Matt 2 or 3 years ago. He won Champion American at a show recently. Unfortunately he cut his comb before the show and there was a scab on the cut but when the scab came off the cut was deeper than I originally thought. They are all around 7 / 8 months old.

This is another son and brother to the one above.
