The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

I have been doing my ancestry. I remember those days as well. When I was a kid I liked to play in the coal bin and my mother would get quite angry with me. There was just my brother, sister and I. Jimmy, we are the same age. I saw your birth date I think you were born in September and I was born in January. My hubby was born in 1940. Back then most of the people seemed to farm. When I was looking up the ancestors occupations, most were farmers. My side of the family is Dutch from the Netherlands. The Dutch keep really good records. My husband has been doing his ancestry too and found the same with his family. His family is French Canadian on his fathers side and English on his mothers side.

So, Id wager that no one could guess my age based on this, but until I was 9, we used an outhouse. ..I just had a girl ask me the other day if it was true that the road I live off of, if the phones used to be all 'party line' types.. I laughed and said yep, clear up til almost the early 90s (we are rural)..
I LOVE researching my ancestry. .to me there is nothing more interesting.

Oh my folks, I just love talking about all the good old days but once before a few of us got started on things other then the RIR's and one of the others said "Hey, this is the Heritage RIR Thread", I'll just say this then I'm getting off all the old times. ha,ha. Some folks are a little touchy I guess. lol

CMOM, with me being the youngest of the 12, I've heard an awful lot of the old time stuff because my dad was born in 1897 and mom in 1905. Gee, that seems ancient. If mom was here she'd hit me on top the head and say Hey Boy. lol More times then I can count I remember dad building a fire out in the yard with stones around it and putting the big oval copper boiler on it filled with water and mom putting our white cloths in there and scrubbing them on the wash board with lye soap till her hands were sore. We had some of the whitest T-shirts and under shorts that you would see. lol God Bless my dear old momma. Oh, it's October for me. lol Gee, my oldest brother was born in 1923. I've got nieces and nephews older then me. And like you I am Dutch on the one side but Irish on the other. And mom also had a little Am Indian supposedly. I guess I am a hybrid. ha,ha.

Now to the chickens. I did the water test on the six eggs that didn't hatch and there was no movement at all so I tossed them this morning. Unless a hen steals here nest out, that is it for me for this year. I don't want to many cause it is to hard for me in the winter time.

Sally, that is good that you have that many males as for eating but that is an awful lot of work. I usually try to find some of my friends that would like a nice red boy. lol Your daughter sounds real comical. I had 144 nieces/nephews in 5 generations but more then that now. That is with the great great and the greats included. lol

Okay, got to get off here for a while. I hear some pretty loud chirping in the other room so I guess someone wants something. Maybe they just want a little talking to.

Thanks Jimmy for the walk down memory road. It was a fun walk. Looks like we have a lot in common. My month old Reese babies are growing. I tried to get some pictures but they weren't cooperating as usual. There are some RC RIW's too. I still have chicks in my brooder cabinet too. I tried an experiment breeding a RC RIR male to RC RIW's females. The female chicks are blackish and the males look like Sex-Link males.

I'm far from the expert on this but I think that anytime you cross the red males with white females you will get the sex link coloring. Over the years I've had the red and black stars from McMurray for layers and, oh my, do they lay and their eggs are the size of a duck or goose egg. When I had them I sold lots of eggs and the eggs barely fit in the jumbo egg cartons well enough to close the lid. Some sere actually too large. lol I personally have never crossed any like that.

I know that when Bob was living, he wanted me to do a little project for him but I just never wanted to get into it so he was going to have me start it and send him a few chicks but he passed during the time that he and I were talking back and forth about it. Oh my, I sure do miss him when I get to talking about things like this. He was on my mind so strong just a couple of days ago that I had to take a little quiet time. I've gotten many saved emails from him and read them every once in a while. Would love to be able to share with him what my little project is that I'm going to be working on for a while but that can't be.

Yes, it was fun on my end also walking down memory lane. My mom and I did that so many times. She passed in 97 at 92 years old and we were together always so we shared many walks down that road together. lol Keep up the good work and most of all, have fun in what you are doing. When the fun leaves and it becomes like a job then that is the time to make some changes in what you are doing. lol

Hello everyone I hope yall don't mind my questions. What are the pros, cons of the line dick hortsman has in the single comb, and rose comb Rhode Island reds. Would they be good starter birds, thanks.

Yes, they are good starter reds. They lay a lot of eggs and look fairly good. Dick has improved them a bunch with his breeding program.

They are very friendly, calm and easy to manage too.

The sexlink thread talks about using silver to make red sexlinks. The problem is that you do not always know what is hiding in the white breed. Some work well and others do not.

The best way to tell is to give it a go and see what you get.

Thank you. I'm not sure if I want to purchase single comb, or rose comb though.
