The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Bob never got birds from E.W. Reese...he got his birds from a lady named Anna Pearson. Anna got birds from Reese on a regular basis but Bob did not. Bob shared birds with many more than 3 people but the 3 you mentioned are the ones that kept and showed them.
I have many different combinations in my RIR's...I have pure birds from Greg Chamness and "Crossed" birds from the Chamness/Simmons cross. I have many families of each.

Matt

Of course you are right Matt. I should have read the information on Bobs website more carefully. Im glad you corrected me on this as I dont want to pass bad information to others. I think I will just go back to lurking until I have more knowledge and experience experience to contribute and not be muddying the water.
It must be very difficult to keep track of as many families as you have. Do you Band or toe punch to keep track of identification?

No, no...don't quit commenting! That is what this website is for...to educate and if you don't start a conversation then nobody can be educated.

I do toe punch upon hatching to keep them separate. Each year I make new crosses with the different families trying to create "that bird" that is perfect. Hasn't happened yet but I'm still working on it.

My girl has laid 7 days in a row! When she is happy she's great. Can we go 8. And who says Heritage Reds don't lay good!

My Heritage Reds also are very good layers. Several friends have told me lately that their backyard flocks have either slowed down quite significantly and some say their birds have quit. My older general population birds have slowed up but the Reds keep going. It has been in the 90's here every day. I do turn on sprinklers for them and they do have shade.

I will still be watching everything happening and will ask questions when I have them. I think I do need to know alot more before I comment again about the breed/history. Just reading and researching isnt enough and the last thing I want to do is to put out the wrong information.

I have so much admiration for all of you that have been doing this for years and you all have much more knowledge about these matters and can answer better than I can...for now. Rest assured that when the time comes for my questions, I wont hesitate to ask. I will be around for a long time and will drive you all nuts with questions! Until that time comes, I will be admiring your birds and congratulating on the champions produced.

Group with 12 chicks are 2 weeks and the others with 6 are the super chicks (1 week) that I had such a hard time with. lol This is it for me for this year. If they all do good, this is enough for me to work with thill next year. lol Gee, I wasn't going to hatch any this year at all but as most of you know, as long as we have eggs and an incubator or broody it is hard not to raise a few (or for some, a lot.) LOL Our weather is so strange this year, high 80's for a few days then down in the low 50's for the next few. It is only 56 right now. I waited for my hatching thinking I could put them outside early but gee, they would need hoodies and knee socks on. LOL Oh well, I love the cooler weather just can't seem to take the heat. I know Matt, you are probably grinning from ear to ear about me talking about the hot weather. That's okay, I just can't take that hot weather especially with high humidity.

They are looking good. It is amazing to see them make it in adversity. I hope you get that special one or two from them.

You must be close to me..we were in the upper 80s last week, dry and hot..today the high is 67, rain and chilly all this week..I've got so much to do outside and is looking like I'm not gonna get anything accomplished. . I love your babies..I thought I was gonna be able to get some eggs this year, but it's not working in my favor :( I did manage to snag a dozen + Norwegian Jaerhon eggs that someone else backed out on, so come next spring between those, the Silkies and Tolbunt Polish I should be able to sell enough chicks to buy the HRIR's that I really want and have plenty of time between now and then to get them a super coop ready. That's not saying, if the opportunity presents before then, that I won't snag them up sooner..lol..

And yes, please don't leave.. I'm as new as a newbie gets with the HRIR's and I love ALL the info from everyone...if it's wrong, it's just makes me do more research and theres nothing wrong with that..keeps me on my toes..lol
