The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

So do production reds bred with barred rocks still make black sex links
Just my thoughts, but if we use common sense, the hatcheries do not have the old time reds like you find on this thread so they would have to be using the Production red etc cock bird over the hatchery barred rock hens in order to get their black stars, black sex link etc. My feelings would be that if you used this cock bird over barred rock hens that you should get the sex link chicks. Don't take this for being gospel though because I'm only giving my opinion. I've never done this.

Ihave question. I saw a young pullet about 3 months old being sold as a rhode island red she had a BEAUTIFUL dark monghonagy color but she had light legs with a grayish tint any ideas as to what breed she may be???

As an experiment I did a cross with a RC RIR male and RC RIW females. In the past I have crossed one of my Reese males with some SC RIW females and the chicks turned out to be Red Sex-Links. I thought I may get pretty much the same except the chicks would be Rose Comb. Well they were Rose Comb and the males looked like the Red Sex-Links but the females hatched out black. At first I thought this must have been a mistake and I must have mixed in some of my general population pen eggs, so I hatched out another batch of eggs. Well the same thing happened. I did a 3rd and 4th hatch with the same results.

At a show a few years ago a judge marked on my coop tag that the legs were not good color. I asked him what he meant and he told me they should be more yellow, so I have been working on the leg color.
I understand what you are talking about To me they look great but im not a APA show judge and i have seen some that had what i thpught was good leg color until i saw some that the legs where as yellow as yellow corn and i mean BRIGHT yellow my durham strain one if my young pullets had good dark shining color but her legs had something to be desired but she was only 11 weeks old but in the last 5weeks that I've had rosie she has showed great improvement in leg color even brighter and more yellow than the other 2 that I got with her. Now i'm going WoW

each time I look at her the dark bright yellow of candy corn or yellow corn is what I see each time I look at rosie I didnt expect this from her so it has been a very big surpise .To me your birds are BEAUTIFUL great looking birds good luck with ya showing of your birds and impovement of your birds .One question how can you improve on birds like yours ?I giess the bodies are so great that the judges say more improvement.Like I said I am not a show fowl judge so I would know but anyway Cmom ,Good luck.
