The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Thank you. I was really just looking for a couple of sources to find Rhode Island Reds/Whites. I have looked on-line and pretty much came to the same conclusion about breeders and computers. :) I figured some people here may have information about heritage breeders in my area.

Visiting local shows and even the summer fairs is a great way to find some local breeders. Still not all breeders show their birds.

This has been a terrible year to start looking at the shows or county fairs because the avian flu has shut most of the poultry events down, at least in my area.

Where do you live, what area of the country? I breed Rhode Island Reds and Rhode Island Whites. I do show my birds at different poultry shows. I usually take some birds also to sell. Last year a young girl purchased one of my RIR cockerels and got a champion with him.

Not the greatest pictures. It seem when they are posing perfectly as soon as you finger its the shutter button they move.

You must live in the northern part of the US. My brother lives in northern Michigan and there was no poultry at the fairs and no shows either in Michigan.

Almost 15 states, there abouts, shut down. There's a few "lists" floating around the internet, keeping track of it all for exhibition people, including 4H kids, fairs, and even swaps and auctions. North Carolina, in the south, reacted very sternly, so it's not just the northern-central portion of the country, although we certainly took it on the chin up here. Pretty wide spread reaction. Some of the states appear to be loosening their bans a wee bit as they realize that poultry shows simply aren't much of a threat. But exhibition poultry folks aren't even on most State Vet's radar. Their myoptic view is solely to protect the commercial operations at all cost.

My fall/winter show season got blown out the water and I have little to no recourse as AI testing is not included in our state's NPIP. So even if other states, such as TN with the Knoxville show, will accept out of state entries, they're requiring AI certs that we cannot meet. Heavy sigh.

So far, here in the south our season is business as usual. I know several people here, from years of showing, that also go to many of the northern shows, but I guess they won't be going this year.

If anyone is coming to Florida, our next poultry show is in Inverness, Florida

Yes, I am from PA an all of our poultry shows at the county fairs were shut down. Our farm show (state fair) isn't until January so we will see how that goes.

I'm in Indiana and our fairs / shows were closed for a while too. But there are records from last year. The 4H county extensions are good for the information concerning the fairs. The shows typically have a secretary that records at least the winners info. So even in a year like this one, a person can find out a bit by looking up the shows info and making some contacts.
Plus on the buyer's bright side, most of the people that planned on showing this year already had their birds hatched and growing before the announcements to close up were made in each state. I have seen lots of posting on FB with birds for sale that were supposed to be shown. So its possible there is a breeder looking for someone to buy his birds that could not be shown and sold at the fair / local bird show.

Quote: I agree with Sally. Many breeders have surplus birds from their hatches and some are potential show quality. I take sale birds to the shows first before I offer them for sale otherwise. I take my best birds that have potential. If I have birds that don't make the cut, I sell them to people just wanting nice layers and maybe a male, and some may go into my general population coop and pen. I had been selling quads and trios but that leaves me with a lot of males, so this year I'm going to offer the birds in pairs. Some of the birds I have sold have placed well at shows. I also suggest contacting the show secretaries or 4H, FFA, fair agricultural department and they probably would give you an list of the entries for the last shows and a list of the winners and how they placed.

I wish you the best of luck with your search. We've been asking around for about a year and for some reason, True HRIR seem to be just out of reach. Our daughter finally had to settle for a production red. It's a pretty bird, but that youngin' isn't a happy camper(yet).

I guess I am, though. Most of her friends are all into older boys or worse. There is some of that, but I'm glad she's found another hobby to obsess over.

Anyways, good luck with it all. Maybe you'll end up with some mighty fine hatching eggs you'll be willing to part with.
