...what say ye...these are from Thomas Jefferson lineage..4 mo in this pic

I have no idea what Thomas Jefferson means. If it is the president or another person of that name.

However, it doesn't really matter as all these birds are hatchery type stock and none are Standard bred Rhode Island Reds. They're just production reds, sorry.

Matt, I would love to talk to you about your birds for sale. I would also like to ask a question. I have been reading about the Mohawk RIR breed & saw where some of the birds have amber color eyes & some have red eyes. What is the difference in these 2 lines?

The Standard calls for the color of the eyes of a RIR to be "Redish Bay". Anything other than that would be incorrect. I have not heard of the birds with Amber eyes. Let me caution you first that there are people out there that say lots of things about the "Mohawk" line of RIR that have no idea what they are talking about. There are also people using that name as a selling point when the birds they have are not in fact from the Reese line.

First, the breed was not developed until almost a century after T. Jefferson, so folks who don't know that, don't know and the whole thing is a sham. It was not accepted as a breed by the American Poultry Association until 1904.

Secondly, there is no pedigree records, no chain of command that could/would EVER link some birds to Thomas Jefferson. Good grief.
The knowledgeable buyer cannot be taken in by such foolishness.

Yikes...I'm not really sure what to say about that. chickenWill...I am assuming that you are not just joking so I will say that just a minimal amount of research should have told you that the Rhode Island Red was not even a thought in someone's head until 50 years after Thomas Jefferson was dead. You may want to do a little research in the future.

I think I saw some chickens at the Biltmore in NC the last time I was there. I'm almost sure you could ask them for eggs, if you want famous chickens. And if you offer them hatching egg prices you just might get a lot of eggs. It seems like the place is booming over there, new hotels, more ticket options, and of course the lovely gardens.
But as for chickens from the plantation of Thomas Jefferson, I'm thinking those are long gone. I could be wrong though. The historical society is able to trace down furniture and all kinds of other "valuable" junk when they restore historical homes. I suppose it is possible that some kind of chickens were kept and flock bred at the home over the years. Not the RIR though as others have pointed out, the dates are wrong for that to be true.

yeah..I feel bad for my wife..she bought them as a gift for me.I suppose it will pass. Don't want famous, just wanted heritage to help conservation ya know?
