I visited Wilfred Kittle today. He is still going fine with his Reds. He's got 5 breeding pens going. I picked up a male and two douzen hatching eggs and a lot of information. He is still in pretty good health. I plan to write an article about him for the next RIR Club newsletter.

I've got twenty two single comb Ron Fogle chicks and three Roslyn Pickens RIR bantam pullets. They all free range and look good.

I have 8 very healthy 3 week old SC RIR chicks from Mr. Fogle in Arkansas. My flock eats a fermented wet feed mix of 24% gamebird feed and scratch grains to average about 20-21% protein. They also have access to 20 Flock raiser dry crumbles. I also give ground meat or liver as a supplement for the lack of meat in their food. Everyone free ranges except the chicks in the brooder.

I have 10 almost 3 month olds from Ron. And there are getting BIG!! They have been outside since they have been around 2-3 weeks old. Was feeding Home Grown Chick starter by Purina. Switching to Southern States Meat maker. 20%. For chicks and Roos. Then there 16% layer feed for the hens.

Been playing around with fermented feed the last month. I asked Ron for his opinions on it. Anybody else have one??

I have 16 Mohawk's from Chris H. I know very little in reguards to shows and breeding to contribute to this thread but I do enjoy the reading especially the history lessons.
I to am struggling with finding a good high protein feed. When there a lil older I do plan to free range my birds. I was reading up on BSF larva as a supplement for protein. I read their 17% live and 45% dried due to water loss.
Prolly wrong thread for the ? But feed has been a topic as of late.

I have two 8 mos. old hens, and in couple of weeks expecting 3 juvenile hens to join our small flock which I am quite excited about. I've had my first HRIR, about 20 yrs. ago, and ever since that time, they have remained to be one of my very favorite birds. They were gorgeous, big, birds with deep mahogany color where they used to look almost black from distance. As well as their beauty, I was quite taken by their solid, no nonsense kind of temperament. The big mistake on my part was to never breed my gorgeous birds. All of them lived into their old age; passed away with natural causes, and I still miss them.
I am very happy to finally have RIR chickens again; but, this time, I am planning to hopefully acquire a quality rooster so to be able to raise some beautiful, up to standard chicks.
I am enjoying this thread very much which is making it possible for me to learn from experienced breeders. Thank you!

I'm trying to find something other than Purina feed to feed my chickens. Poor things keep getting there feed changed. Even though they don't really care. lol But anybody here ever use southern states all grain meat bird maker for chicks and roos? I CAN NOT find really any other feed around here that has animal protein in it.

 

I'm in east TN and had the same problem. Have you considered making your own. I mix and grid my own. It is easy to do, much easier to find the ingredients I want, and easy to balance different rations according to management groups. I use non-gmo corn, oats and field peas for my grains. Field peas are a great source of protein and the chickens love em. I add nutri-balancer to each batch and then add limestone and fish meal as needed (less limestone for chicks and more fish meal when i need higher protein). I balance each week according to the amount of BSFL I estimate I will have each week. I keep a batch of layer mixed up all the time and then a separate batch when I'm raising chicks and/or meat.
Being in SC it would be extremely easy to raise your own BSFL as they are native there. I am currently working on doubling my BSFL population to freeze and/or dehydrate enough to feed in the winter also. HUGE money savings.
Just some thoughts I'd share after years of experimenting to provide a good quality feed at a low cost. We've been pleased with the results.
