I would think that commercial poultry would be medicated as well as vaccinated since they are such large operations and the slightest illness/disease could wipe out an entire poultry barn and would cause a great deal of financial loss.

Bob, I just went to ACE, our FRM dealer, to pick up some more feed only to find that the price has gone up $2.00 per 50# for both the starter and the grower. Have you seen an increase in the FRM feed recently up your way?

Yes the Purina Honor show chow broiler and turkey rations have the animal proteins in them too. Its Purina's "Sunfresh recipe blend" feeds that are their vegetarian varieties. <For the soccer moms and tree-huggers.... ect.

And one of several reasons why I mix my own rations... I know exactly what I am getting that way.
And more importantly... I know what I am NOT getting. I'm not getting any antiobiotics, soy, or gmo anything.
I'm getting a balanced ration with the proper amount of animal protein, not just other proteins.

I spent way more time than I should have yesterday afternoon watching the 13 day old chicks play keep away when I gave them a few BSF for the first time. I wish I had banded the smart few who figured out they had a prize. The remaining were just wanting to steal the prizes while the smartest trio kept grabbing them and running.
It was hysterical entertainment.
This is a terrible photo, but the look on their faces as they watch their first wiggly snack is enough to make anyone chuckle. They just kept cocking their heads trying to figure out what to do with them. But the second one ate one, these three scrapped for the remaining few while the other 18 chicks couldn't figure out what was so exciting. I will give them more than a few today and see if the other chicks have gotten a clue.

Southern States is not that cheap down here. It seems once the delivery trucks cross over the Florida line the price of everything jacks up.

It is/they are but they also feed those animals a ration of feed for a certain time before selling the to "clean them out", so to say. But on the other hand the % of the meds in the starter and grower ration is so minute you'd have to eat a ton of it to have any effects I'd imagine. It is put in the feed in a low dosage not to ward off coccidiosis it is in there to help the chicks build up an immunity (somewhat/or tollerate) the germs. It won't make your nose fall off or your toe-nails turn green( well not right away) LOL

This type feed is not feed to egg-layers as they are/should be well beyond the point of getting a severe case of the disease. One would think this surely, as they have made it 4 or 5 months on Gods green earth so far without issues.

To use medicated or non-medictaed ? that is the question. LOL It is the thing for some folks/not for others, just as most things are in life. No one is the same/ not even identical twins, just clones.

I know what you mean. I lived in Bradenton for a few years. Everything in FL is high. That's why I love SC. Cheapest state to live in I think.

True. When I have new chicks in the beginning of the year, I will buy 1 50lb bag of med feed. After that is gone they go on Meat Birds Maker.

Newbie question...
I've been studying line breeding a LOT over the last year and have a question for those of you who have maintained lines for years with multiple rotated breeding pens....

If most pens contain multiple hens do you trap nest to determine laying quantity and quality and/or to hatch specific matings?
Or worded differently... if each "breeding pen" has multiple hens how do you keep records for each hen.
I know there are many ways of doing this... but I'm curious what folks ARE doing?
