The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

No reason to contact Steven. All he has is GMO eating Mutants over there. I know because he got them from me and that is all I have. Some of them have 12 toes, 3 heads and speak Spanish. That GMO stuff is bad news.

Yes Matt that is right except the 12 toe part, that was on your feet not the chickens! I told you not to eat the chicken feed......Oh wait was that number on one foot or a total from both....

X2 On my way to church and I'll say an extra little one for you Jeff and a little bigger on for Matt. ha,ha,ha Gotta go get that piano rockin. Hey Jeff, PM me your address and I'll send you something. Never thought of it before. lol
Jim
Hey Jim you better say TWO for Matt after all that.lol

I currently feed about 25 lb/day of FF (gmo free, soy free). Most of that feed is going to this years chicks because they are still confined and not free ranging. The production layers support my other breeds. The high demand for these eggs is there, so I provide em. It supports my other breeds because let's face it... The production birds lay a lot of eggs. I slaughter everyone who is over 3 yrs old each year and let broodies raise more. Their main protein is BSF even in the winter, which are easy to raise here almost year round for free.
We are a working farm... We HAVE to make money or we would go hungry. We make a better profit by feeding non-gmo. And we go through a lot less feed because we ferment. We ferment in 5 gallon buckets and I have 3-4 buckets fermenting at any given time. They just sit in my feed room. Its no more trouble than feeding any other way.

Here I was, all bent out of shape I'd missed 50 some odd posts, and you all are just a buncha comedians.

Reds, reds, reds, reds, reds, reds, reds reds.... Shake it off... Ok.

Looking forward to the next 50 posts. I think.

what's worse feed meat free full of Soy Bean Protein or FRM Game Bird Pellets with animal Protein.

My problem is I don't eat my chickens and I am trying to put type, egg production and a finish on them that will make a judge fall to his knees.

I don't want to make a mistake like a friend of mine who raised twenty five quail on chicken 15 % feed his quail could not fly off the ground they where so poorly feathered. He was to tight to feed them a good game bird feed. Need help.

19 years ago for future use need to store

Red Bantams are part of the old black and white standards and that is kind of my cut off periods for H chickens. They got invented about the 1930s so I think they will make it. bob

New to this thread and dont have time to read all the post but just wondering if you all consider Bantam RIR a heritage breed. Here is a picture of my breeding pair. Is there a way to tell the sex of a chick? I read that you can tell with the stripe on top of the head. I just hatched 4 chicks 2 days ago and there is no stripe on any of the heads. But the color is so dark i dont think i could see a stripe if there is one. There is stripes on the back of 2 of them. My rooster did have a really nice comb before last years winter.

Meat free full of soy is way worse. Animal protein is what they need. Mine are currently getting 20%+

Just my 2 cents, but birds need animal or insect protein; but then, I feed my dog RAW, 'cause I believe an animal with 99% wolf genes probably ought to eat a lot like a wolf... If you can trust the *quality* of the animal protein in the brand of feed you use, then that's awesome. I don't want to research all the companies... and my local feed store is no help anyway, so I'm using that annoying Pearsons square... and my protein sources are Ferm'd or cooked beans, mealie worms, and my husband is constructing a BSF bin that hopefully will be all figured out for fall. I also feed them any meat leftover bits (if you don't eat meat, that's a bit tricky, but if you have a dog and feed RAW like we do, lots of bits about) we have. Local peeps drop by their crab carcasses, and we CL and freecycle grab fish carcasses and whatnot as well.
Good luck! Bet your birds look better than anyones around, no matter what! :)

The latest theory is that dogs descended from Foxes and not wolves, but of course they are meat eaters too. Can anybody tell me why I can't post pictures? Either I'm getting old or this site isn't very user friendly.

Sometimes you have to have a certain number of posts, (spam guard) but you're over the minimum. Sometimes it is just plain old user error. Sometimes the Pads of various kinds aren't compatible. Sometimes even the browser isn't compatible. I know the owner recommends using either Chrome of Firefox as the two most compatible. I use Safari and Firefox with never the issues that seem to crop up with others. That is all I know, and maybe more than I know. LOL
