The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

I had set 6 eggs from my RC birds a while back. I hatched 4 young from them. They were 6 weeks old Wednesday. I was just looking at them and thought gee these guys are really growing fast. I'm almost 100% sure that this is a little cockerel. Not much wattle yet but the legs are really heavy. I was just in aw at the brick shape of him already. These chicks just amaze me. I couldn't get him to stand straight up. Scared on that little table. lol As they grow and get out, I'll try to get some better pictures.

REALLY nice chick Jimmy

can you see the brick shape all ready in his frame. Also he has great beak color at this age. This is what makes these the real old fashion Rhode Island Reds.

To bad people can not buy these at the feed stores.

This past summer I met a woman selling chicks at local swaps hatched from RIR she got from Duane Urch. I have never seen her adults so I don't know how they look, but they have to be light years ahead of hatchery/production reds. She was asking $5 per chick, straight run, and people were giving her arguments over her pricing because they could go to the local feed store and buy chicks from the pullet bin for $3-4 each. She kindly explained, over and over again, the difference. She is a great ambassador for non-hatchery chicks, and is making her chicks easily available to local buyers at what I think are very reasonable prices. She is also active in the state's poultry club, and does cleanup and setup at the State Fair poultry show. She made a huge impression on me, and hopefully on many of the people she spoke with.

I want to be her when I grow up :) . Hoping my ladies don't experience too much relocation shock when they come in the mail. It's still too hot to ship in TX, and we're definitely cooling off here! :)

Jimmy, I've noticed on the chicks that I've hatched from you and ChickMagnet that the pullets will squeal and fuss like little girls when I pick them up, but as they get a little older they all fuss when I pick them up. Figured out the girls from the boys right off and I was right, but might not work on the next bunch. Just my observation.

I usually go by the legs and wattles more then anything else. Here is a picture of you little ones little brother. He is just 4 week on this picture.

This is my observation before the wattles. The wattles help me later but I have had a general idea of who was what. Like Mr. Bob says you have to take what you get.
