The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

The term heritage is of recent origin. It was promoted as a way of drawing attention to true bred birds of breeds that were once prominent. Sadly, most examples of these breeds today, as they are mass produced by the hatcheries, are very sad examples of what these wonderful birds once were. In some cases, there is actually a risk that true bred examples might disappear altogether.

A "heritage" bird is defined differently by different groups for their own reasons. What you can take to the bank is that in this thread, when we refer to "Heritage" Rhode Island Reds we are not referring to the versions sold by the hatcheries and feedstores. Those birds may be sold under that name, but do NOT represent the breed. The breed, like other heritage breeds, are described by the American Poultry Association and conform to the Standard of Perfection written for the breed.

Here are two photos. You tell me. Which is the true Rhode Island Red?

wow, great explanation, thanks and that second picture isn't even a RIR of any standard.lol.
So if I gave you some pictures of my 2 RIR banties would you be able to tell me if the are Heritage?
( keep in mind I'm here in Aus so our standard is different but I want to see if they meet your criteria? )

They are now 9 mos. old, and finally their molt is over. Both the pullets, and the cockerel are quite calm, and gentle with the other birds as well as with me. I had to separate the RIR cockerel from my NH cockerels for several weeks to give him a bit of protection; for, even though he is very large, was having difficulty protecting himself against 4 others. Now, all is well, and the harmony is back. Well, for cockerels that is : )

The pullet in the back (going by the comb) looks like she is coming pretty close to POL. Don't know if you remember Bob posting or maybe it was in one of my PM's from him but look at this boys black spur point. Bob mentioned this several times. He looks a little short in the back but I'm guessing that it is probably the way he is standing.

I like the width of his chest on this picture. That is a very nice pullet also. I'm not saying anything at all about the leg color on these birds because I know how taking pictures can bleach out the yellow on the feet/legs. IF, the boy is a little short in the back, your pullets look pretty long so you can work with them. How much fun would it be working with these birds if they were all perfect. Gee, we wouldn't have anything to do but set and look at them. lol [/QUOTE]

Hey guys,

I'm fairly new here, I have some hatching eggs coming that I bought from a seller on e-bay. His listing says they are from Reece lines. I don't know much of anything about the different lines of HRIR, and would appreciate any info anyone might have on these birds.

The are coming from Rome, GA. I'm hoping the cold weather doesn't hurt my hatch rate. The main reason I bought them was for improving Rhodebars, which I also have coming, Hopefully I get enough to hatch that I can keep a pen of them pure, while working with the Rhodebars in another pen. From what I've seen these are some gorgeous birds and look to have a good bit of meat on them.

Yes that's JamesA from on here he has some stock from Steven Gribble sgribble and they should be good if he's bred them right and kept them on par with the standard.
