The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Well we caught the culprit that made my little chick an orphan, a big male opossum. He got another of my hens off of her nest but she was able to get into the corner of the coop behind a piece of hardware cloth that was propped against the wall. She is shaken but appears to be fine. Opossum bit the bullet, several actually. Now to find out how he was getting in.

Oh I am so sorry but so glad you solved the mystery.

I am so glad to have found out as well. The thought that 1 of my hens could have done that was driving me crazy. Orphan chick is in with my F1's and although the first night was rough for her, she is doing good now and getting along with the other chicks.

Just curious... How many folks have HRIR that go broody? And if, so how often? Is it inherited? I like to have a few broodies so i don't mind, but am curious what other have experienced, especially from this line. I will call Gary today and let everyone know what he says.

In my #4 breeding pen i believe I may have a 9 month old Underwood going broody. I had to boot her off the nest to collect hatching eggs late in the afternoon several days in a row. I assumed she was just laying. Then yesterday late afternoon I reached in and she said, "I'm not moving". No big deal... Didn't wanna rile her up so left her.

Went out at 7:30am today and thought I'd just check... Sure enough she's in the nesting box.

Stick some eggs under her, Sheri. Let them do the work. So far I have had 5 go broody. I also saw my two hens in with Rhodie both sitting in their nest yesterday and both were still sitting when I locked up last night.

Just wanted to say congratulations to Matt Ulrich on a very nice win yesterday at the Central Florida Poultry Breeders Show in Inverness, FL. He had Best RI Red, Champion American, and Reserve Champion Large Fowl on a very nice cock bird. It was a pleasure to handle and judge such a nice bird...well done Matt. That bird truly deserved that win.

Congrats!

Pictures?

Hi Laingcroft,

When I'm judging I just don't have time to stop and take pictures, I wish that I did. I wound up judging all the large fowl except the Asiatic class, all the waterfowl and all the large fowl Jr. birds in the show. Probably 400 plus birds and that's a lot to do in one day. By the time I got done with the English Class with all those massive Orpingtons I was pretty well whipped for the day. The only bantams I handled were 4-5 when we were picking show champions. LOL

If it's the bird that I think it is I think Matt has posted pictures of him not too long ago. However, Matt would be the one to confirm that.
