The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

wow a tough winter here in the north east part of texas also. but not nearly what you guys up north have. i have 50 reds in the brooder and 150 eggs in the bator. going to hatch just a few more maybe 50 then thats it for this year. i have a question for those in the know. if i put lights on these pullets hatched march 1 in august do you think they will lay by oct ? the thought is i might hatch some fall chicks and see if i can get 3 generations in 2 years speed up the improvement process you might say. has anyone done this with heritage reds? mine are from Ron Fogel.. thanks for the input..:)

I don't know. I hatched some females Sept 5 and they were exposed to lights in fall and winter, being in proximity to the layer pen. It didn't rush them much, that I could tell. The Nelson pullet laid this week at 30 weeks and a GSBR pullet still hasn't started. I don't see anything wrong is trying to provide them with 12-13 hours of light this fall, but I cannot promise it would speed things up to any huge degree. That's my experience.

My Red birds were a bit older before they started laying. I have one that is a runt and at 10 months still hasn't layed an egg. I have a RSL that is also a runt but she started laying at 6 months. They have another RC RIW girl they have bonded with that lays regularly. They are the Andrew sisters.

These birds are all the same age. The RC RIW is normal size.

I believe I found out why I was having so much infertility in one of my RIR pens---mites!! I treated all my chickens not too long ago and now I have to go at it with a vengeance. Having a lot of birds is work enough, but when there are problems like mites, it can become overwhelming. I am going to have to cut way back, and cut out a couple of breeds. This is just exhausting and depressing

In about 8 straight years of raising chickens, this is my first experience with this nasty pest. Here are my Mohawk/Reese RIRs in the pen that didn't appear to have any mites (but got treated anyway).
