As a pullet it might mean something. Reminds me, somewhat, of my situation last year, when I ordered RIR from Sandhill. They had the most distinctive stripping and head markngs of any RIR chicks that I had ever seen. I got all excited, thinking that I had something special, but it turned out to be a lot less than special, when they grew up.

cmom, I am quite capable of uploading the wrong photo.

Anyhow, that old photo from Steven, following Bob's very first post is the complexion I'm talking about. I see it on several of the pullets and I find it striking. They catch your eye when they have that super dark face. Have no idea what it means or doesn't mean for their adult future look. We shall see.

I do have a pullet that is more or less the same with that super dark look. It is hard to get pictures because when ever I walk into their pen the are at my feet and I have to be careful not to step on anyone so it's very hard to get a picture unless it's a group photo. The one on the left in front of my shoe is looking pretty good but you can't tell by the picture and he loves to be held. He is always the first one to come over to me like he is waiting for me to pick him up. These pictures aren't a good representation of the birds either. I have quite a few males and will grow them out for a few more months then decide who to keep and who not to keep. Of my RC RIR birds all are female except for the possibility of one that appears to be a male.

I threw a little scratch out for them to get them from under my feet. The male in the middle of the picture with his head down pecking at the scratch is the same one at my feet in the other picture on the left in front of my left shoe.

Am I understanding you didn't like Sandhill's RIRs?

From what I've seen, Sandhill's RIR are not standard bred. If that is the question you are asking...

Yesterday butchered 3 of this year's RIR cockerels. I'm down to 9 cockerels, not sure how many pullets, but a lot more. I was actually hoping for more cockerels this year so I could hopefully find one that is exceptional. So far, I don't think any of them are but it is hard to tell, they are only about 4 months old. My friend and judge Gene Helton is coming over in the morning to help me evaluate. I'm giving him some processed chicken, cut up into parts, as thanks
