Here's a great example of a really mad cockerel. He says baths and cages are for sissys and the ONLY thing fun about going to a show is having cute girls in the adjoining hotel rooms. ;-)

He is vary handsome. My boy is starting to fill out. I would have to go out to my hatching room and look at the calendar to be sure exactly how old my boy is. (It's raining right now) He isn't as pretty as your boy. My boy just recently started crowing. I don't think he knows he is a boy yet. He has 2 girls. They follow each other all around our back yard. They know where the wild bird feeders are and make the rounds.

He hasn't tried to mate the girls yet.

Hi I am new to this forum. I have been reading for a few months but never participate. I have had chickens for years but they have been just whatever hatchery type I found. But now we have decided that we want to get about 3 different breeds and do them well we want to find some good solid heritage lines. My son also is interested in showing.we live in Bryson city nc in the mountains of nc. the problem is we are having a lot of trouble finding them here.and I have made some calls and sent some emails but not getting any responses I am willing to have them shipped or drive a little for the right ones. The breed we want to start with is none other than rhode island red.then the other breeds are barred rock and buff orpington.but rir first Any advice and or contact info I can get is greatly appreciated.

Trying to do justice to three breeds at once is quite difficult. Since it takes many, many chicks in each breed to make progress. But, be that as it may.

Bobbie Anderson is in NC and he just won big at the Ohio National. I'd start there. There are also good Red breeders in South Carolina. Steven Gribble for one.

Yeah understand what you are saying. Those are just the breeds we want to work on in years to come our focus will be on the RIR for now . I just sent messages on Facebook to those two fellows you mentioned about 45 min ago.hopefully I will hear something when they get the messages. I spoke with Steve a few months back. He is just couple hours away. Thank you for the advice so far keep it coming

But there are going to be some good breeders at the TN show. even if you could just meet with them for a bit and get put on a list for chicks in the spring, it would be helpful. Plus you get to see the chickens up close and personal. It is really wonderful to see the quality of the chickens when they are breed to the standard.

I had a lot of barnyard specials but over the past several years decided too to concentrate on heritage Breeds. My first were the Rose Comb Rhode Island Whites which are fairly rare. Next I got some Heritage Single Comb Rhode Island Reds and now I also have some Rose Comb Rhode Island Reds. Most of my birds originally came from breeders I had met at poultry shows. I am concentrating on the same lines so if I get any new birds to introduce into my flocks I get from breeders of the same lines. I usually make arrangements prior to the shows to get some birds. I started with 2 families from the same line. My two original cock birds have passed away and now I only have young males from one of them. When I hatch I grow out all of the chicks. When they get a few months old I keep the best and usually sell the rest. I need a new male for my young girls because I don't want to breed them with their brothers. I am line breeding and don't want to inter-breed. My goal is to keep the lines pure. If you read through this thread there are a number of good breeders mentioned. The thread starter originally had intended to pass some of the names along and I know they are mentioned in some of the previous posts. It will take you awhile but well worth it to read all of the posts. Just read a few at a time. I have the Reese/Mohawk line of Reds. At a recent show one of my males took Champion American and one of my females also took Champion American. I only hatch in the spring. If you are interested and are unable to find birds or chicks and do hatch, I will have some eggs available. Good luck and have fun...
