The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Only the best 8 hens make it to the four breeding pens each year. I do ship eggs each spring but am not going to take any orders I haven't already received after the losses I've experienced this week. We've had no power or water since Monday, so I've lost an entire incubator of eggs. The first group of 30 is thankfully doing well. They were pictured right after hatch a few days back. They've spent the last 4 days in a dog crate next to my wood stove. It's been 60 degrees in this room all week, so hardiness apparently pays off as all chicks are doing well. And yes, I have litters of taboos in my basement also (I NEVER bring animals in the house). But the only water we have is the tub we filled on Monday. We're charging our cells phones once a day in the truck. Lol

OH NO! :( Man I hate that for you! Where in TN. are you? Sorry you have no water or power!!! I sure hope it's back on quick! Our cousin lives in Ceverville sp? I sure hope they have it since he has cancer and it pretty bad right now. :( They do have a wood heater thank goodness and his hospt. bed is set up in there to.

Yes, I'm going to run a test batch through soon but I have company coming so I'm not putting any eggs in the incubator until they leave. I don't want to have deal with chicks while they are here. I have an apartment I use as my hatchery but the company is going to be staying in it while they are here.

These are a few chicks from my last hatch.
awe they are just precious!!!!

Quote: I have been in your shoes before. I bought a couple of auto jump starters, inverters and a cable that I could connect to my cigarette lighter in my car to charge the jump starters. I had lost power and I transferred the eggs to my styrofoam incubators.

Oh, we have a genie and battery bank, we simply didn't have the switch box wired yet. ;-) You can bet that'll move up the priority list once we thaw out.
But hauling hundreds of gallons of water to the large livestock and keeping it thawed was a much higher priority than saving 45 eggs.
I feel for you. No livestock any more just chickens, but we are getting old and it is too much for us. The chicklens keep us busy enough.

All of us should own one of those books. If you need one while waiting... I had MY library put in a interlibrary loan for me. Got to have one if you are serious about the breeding and proper maintenance of your chosen line/breed.;)

You can download an free old copy from 1921 at the google play store on to your computer and/or smartphone. From the research I have done there is really no changes except for breeds added and breeds no longer recognized by the APA.

I've not figured out HOW to download the free one for my computer. I do have the kindle app from amazon but don't know if that would work or not.

Did you find it? I hope these links help. I have kindle too but it isn't available for kindle.
