How did the show on saturday turn out,??

I placed ok. It was hard because birds I had picked out to groom for the show started molting. I took them any way and was pleasantly surprised and did better than I thought I would. I took a Rose Comb RIR cockerel and pullet, a Single Comb RIR pullet and a Rose Comb RIW pullet to show. I took some SC RIR hens and cockerels and some RC RIW cockerels to sell. Didn't sell any of the RIW boys but sold all of the RIR hens paired up with the cockerels and some of the RIR cockerels. I still have a lot of birds in my pens. I still need to get rid of a lot of the males because it won't be long before I have to get my breeding pens set up and right now the boys are in some of them..

I am behind on the messages. Haven't had anything to contribute. We've been busy trying to get our place ready so we can move into it before the holidays. It's a total overhaul so ....busy all the time.

Cmom, Congratulations on placing at the show! Sounds like you had a productive day. And....I know someone who would be interested in buying some RIR eggs for hatching when you are ready to sell them. They are looking now but haven't found anyone to ship as far as I know at this time. I don't actually know who they have contacted but I do know they are wanting some RIR eggs for hatching.

Oh, I do have a question....does anyone feed, or have you fed persimmons to your chickens? I have read conflicting advice on doing such a thing. We have a persimmon tree that dropped a good bit of fruit during these 5 days of constant rain. We won't eat them all & I thought the chickens might enjoy a treat. I just don't want to poison them.

I have 4 new babies since I posted last. They are Ameraucanas. Have no idea what sex but they are cute as a bug's ear. Little lavender fluff balls. That makes 25 chickens in all now. Still only 5 of the RIRs. If I had known then (famous last words, huh), what I know now when we were first buying chickens, I'd stick with one breed until I got more experienced & comfortable with raising chickens. My hubby said he knew about raising chickens so I jumped in feet first with him. Turns out, what he knows is you buy chickens, turn them loose in the yard & that's that. However, that is *not* what we did. We have 4 runs with one of them having 2 smaller runs attached to a huge, fenced/wired area which is also covered. When we get moved, the chickens will have a real "home"/coop with the runs attached. I plan to have the sand floor. We have decided, for now, it is best to separate the Polish "knot heads" from the rest of the flock since they are so small (not young....just small). The rooster has been in the "general population" for a few months but the younger ones don't do well there so we are putting those 3 in their own section. The other 2 are suppose to be pullets but they really pick on the rooster even though he is older. I'm beginning to wonder if they are really pullets or if they are roosters too.

My one bird that I have no idea what breed it is & was hoping, hoping, hoping would turn out to be a pullet (because it was as old as the bantams we got when we got that one & they have been crowing for a while now)....turns out to be a rooster. He started crowing not too long ago. Boy, did my feathers droop! He's so pretty. I wanted him to be a girl so we could raise some pretty babies. And, my "Huckleberry" (yes, I loved Doc Holiday played by Val Kilmer), my Mottled Black Splash Orpington (I think that's what he's called) has found his voice a couple of weeks ago. He's 5 - 6 months old.

I intentionally forage for persimmons to give to the chickens...they love them and have no problems whatsoever with eating them. The wild turkeys LOVE them and I have to try and get them before they are all snatched up by the deer, turkeys, coon, possum, etc.

luckily it's been quite a long time since I moved. Not planning to ever do it again. We had sold our house quite quickly and when we moved we had to do our renovations while living in our new house. We did move after the holidays. We did take most of our belonging to the new place. We rented a large container, put it on the property and a storage unit in town. My mother-in-law was alive and living with us at the time. She was 90 and didn't take the move too well (dementia).

Are there any heritage breeders near SW Missouri? I knew when I got mine from a local breeder they were no where near as dark as what I remember from when I was young.

Mine are young less than six months in the photo but I can see the difference. They are a little brickish but not much.
