The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Ok got another question. I've been reading the standard, and trying to make sense of it all. I know I'm asking dumb questions, so please excuse me. Matt, would the bird that is your avatar be considered to have a low tail set? I know he has won almost everything, and i wish i had one that looked remotely like him, but thats why im asking about this 20% tail rise thing. Out of all my birds, i have only one cockerel and one hen that carries their tail above horizontal
Yes, in that picture he was still going through a molt and didn't have the top of his tail in but when he has his whole tail in it is very close to correct. I will post a picture of him about 2 months after that picture and even though it isn't a good picture of the bird you can see how different he looked with his tail in. Matt
that's a beautiful cockerel Matt

Praying I make the right choices and do Fred proud. Oh would I love to hatch a pullet or cockerel he could take to the show and place well!!! But I fear my girls may not be good enough this year but those cockerels he loaned me ought to make an improvement for next year! ;)

Yes I do love these birds!!

Hi,
frow.gif

Just stepping on for a moment for ask for some info. Who breeds standardbred SQ Rhode Island Reds in the Rhode Island vicinity?
Asking for relative who may want some in the future.
Thanks for your help!
Karen

Back in July I hatched out 8 WCB Polish from a doz Dick Horstman eggs. He included 2 RC RIR of which 1 hatched with a little help from me.

14 weeks old. I started to notice he was a cut above the other production chickens, and found this thread that the late Bob Blosl had started about Heritage RIR, and read all the posts !!

Today Jan 2nd. 26 weeks old. I think he is going to be an excellent specimen of the RC variety, so I set 15 more eggs from Dick which should hatch on about the 20th this month. If I get any decent pullets from the hatch, I will let them breed back to the male.
What do you think of the K and is my plan feasible? BTW he is still molting as you can see from his tail feathers.

Mike

He looks very nice! How did you like the White Crested Black Polish from that line? One of mine has a mild crossbeak and I wondered if it was a common problem in the line. :)

Can i get any opinions on my RIR pullet? She is 5 months old.

For critiques, it is best to let them stand naturally on the ground, so we can see the body shape, tail angle, etc. Get down on the level of the bird for a photo. Her color looks a little pale to me, like a production red.

Alright, thanks. It was a little hard to get a pic of her on the ground because she was in the coop today as it was cold and windy. I will try and get a pic of her tomorrow when she comes out in the morning. Her true color is better in person, it didn't come out well in the pic.
