The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

I believe that when selling Hatching Eggs and Chicks the seller should be very upfront with the buyers. Using terms like Heritage or Show quality when they may not be will leave they buyer with unfulfilled expectations.
I have birds from the Ryan line. This line goes back a very long time here in Arkansas. Their origin is Murray Mcmurry. Although they are far better than current hatchery RIR, they are not SOP or True RIR "Heritage. The Ryan birds are fine birds and fill their purpose in our flock, which is to provide us with lots of eggs and meat.
If you want real RIR do what I did and get another strain. Spend some time researching, they are out there.

As for the Craigslist ad.
It is very irresponsible to purchase hatching eggs and sell the chicks you hatch from them. claiming to know anything about them. I would think that a responsible person would raise the birds make sure they are what they are supposed to be before trying to sell birds or eggs.
This type of thing is why it is so hard to get breeders of real RIR to sell them to new enthusiast.

I agree, the male pictured is light in color and the type is wrong. The tail set is way to high and has a break at the tail.
I see people advertising "Heritage" chickens all the time and in my area I see people on Craigslist advertising "pure bred" chickens when in reality they are just standard hatchery birds. I don't have a problem with people having or selling hatchery birds I just don't like when people misrepresent them. I do think that a lot of people just don't know the difference so I guess in alot situations they are not intending to do harm.
This is a couple of my Cockerels.

Nice birds Matt. You would think most could see the difference in Matt's heritage mohawk line and a hatchery bird. They don't look anything alike. I hatched out birds from the line in Ark last year and culled everyone of them. I spent hundreds of dollars last year trying to get heritage rir's, and this is why I have a problem with peope misrepresenting what they have.In some cases I do think its ignorance, but in some its greed.

We have seen these at the State Fair. They win sometimes and sometimes they don't. Noone is sure where the Ryan Family got their start or what line they are. But they have had them for decades. The Lucky Pickens Farm acquired their entire flock a few years ago. They are not Production type Reds, but SOP type. Here is a photo from the Lucky Pickens Facebook page:

Sorry but I have to disagree. As a Judge & a 25 year Rhode Island Red breeder I assure you that's a production Red, nothing more.
I emailed them some time back when I first saw their birds & their "Heritage" claim. This is why people need to do some homework before they buy. Anyone who had bothered to do some research would realize that these birds are production bred not show bred.
I'm sure they win ribbons at fairs, they have feet & feathers. In an APA sanctioned show I'd disqualify the bird pictured here for being totally lacking in breed type.

I bet 90 percent of people who buy so called Heritage Rhode Island Red eggs end up with Production Reds. Why.?? There are only maybe ten good Rhode Island Red Standard Breed breeders left in the USA. Most of them dont ship eggs. Maybe a few will ship started four week old chicks or sell adult prove birds in the fall. So if you see a ad for six heritage rhode island red eggs look out you are going to be in for a surprise. Most of us on this board know the real dark colored bird owners. But a sucker is born every day and this will never stop. Matt your males are looking better every day.
For you how dont know Matts two males. A fellow in Illinois located two old cock birds about five years old that I sold a 4 H junior about eight years ago. The boy got tired of winning trophy's and showing them and his mother sold the two old males to my Friend
d in Illinois. He called me up and asked me what to do and I asked him do you have any of my old hens still left I sold you. He had some eight and nine years old still alive on his farm.
So I told him cross one of the males onto two or three of the old hens and he got a bunch of killer dark brick shaped Rhode Island Reds. One male was a killer. This male was the father of the two males Matt has in his pictures. So in a year or so Matt will have many nice old fashion Mohawk Rhode Island Reds to share with you. This strain is the oldest line I know of. It will be 100 years old in Mach. Dont get gung ho on buying hatching eggs. These chickens are to valuable to waist good eggs in the post office. They need to be put in the incubator and hatched then raised to four weeks of age then ship ed to the people who want them. That is why you folks cant get good old fashion heritage chickens because the good breeder dont fool with eggs in the post office. You must be patient or you will waist lots of money on eggs and raising chicks that are not true to breed. The hottest breed last year was Barred Rocks. This year its Heritage Standard Rhode Island Reds.bob
