This is a mystery strain of Rhode Island Reds that Ricky picked up from the St Romain family of Louisiana. They got ten started chicks from me about 15 years ago. He won big time at the shows as a junior and in open class his female line went to the dogs. The mother told me they crossed something into the line which is a no no and they never where worth a Hoot since. He went to college and Ricky picked the remander reds from this family. Ricky sent me a picture of two males he had and I loved them. They are in good hands now and will take a few years to undue the harm done but I have faith they will rise to the top again. bob

One day I'll have me some nice Reds in my yard to look at, LOL! All this waiting around for (the right) chicks really stinks! In the mean time I have a very good start with my NH's and BR's going!!!!! I'm just excited to get the Reds going tooooo!!!! CH

I truly enjoy working to revive this strain. This is my second go at LF RIR. The first time was with hatching eggs from a breeder that either was not educated or did not care and sent me eggs that were misrepresented.

In this day of instant gratification, people want a perfect bird straight out of the gate. That was me also.
But there is really no silver bullet for these Heritage Breeds.
For me that has become part of the fun.
I have been hatching since the end of January with two cockerels from last spring. I can already tell a difference in the chicks this spring from the few I raised from my other rooster last fall.
They feather alot faster, weigh more, and are darker at hatch. I am really excited and can't wait to see them as adults. Even as young as they are now, their brick body's are showing. The pullets I selected for my breeders all have extended keel's,, flat backs and good 6 1/2+ pound weight. (and lay well too)

This fall I hope to get 6-8 good pullets and a 2-3 cockerels from this spring. I have A LOT to choose from.

A final thought for anyone thinking about having a nice strain. They are never a finished product, but a continual work in process.

Good luck to y'all and enjoy the ride.

A work in Progress is a great statement. You would think that all you have to do is put the eggs In the incubator and they would All hatch out perfect. Try this I have Buff Brahmas from a famous line of Bill Bowman from Ohio. The first year I hatched 17 chicks. Two males were killers and three females where fantastic. The next year I hatched two then last year i hatched one. This year very egg I put in the incubator hatches. Then my Rhode Island Reds take a vacation. Only have a hand full of chicks to raise. Some years you end up with males and few females the next year you will have the opposite.

Breeding is like a crap shoot. You just don't know some times what will happen.

I know there will be about six trios of Mohawk large fowl breeders for sale this fall ready for those who want them. Eggs or Chicks you may have to wait two or three more years. Then you don't know if you are getting good stuff or not.

Just such a short number of good breeders out there and will take take another two years to get our numbers up. bob

I recently purchased two dozen day old RIR chicks from a breeder that did well at the big show in Indiana. The chicks have white down on their breasts. I was surprised to see any white on RIR chicks. So, My question is, is this normal?
Also, at what age does the black in RIR primary and secondar wing feathers in both male and females, and the beetle green tail feathers in pullets develope?
