You guys should get a game camera and bait. It will record when the predator shows up and pattern them. At least you would know what to look for and when to look.

I have used game cameras also and the coyote never showed up where I knew it was coming into the area. But let me take them down and it shows up. Smart huh?

In my area I have all of the following… fox, coyote, both stray/neighbors dogs, stray cats, bobcat, raccoon possum hawks and owls that I have to worry about.

I have never had a problem in a year and a half then two adult size birds inside of a week. This has only happened when the birds were out free ranging. I have not had anything try and get into any of my 6 coops that I know of yet. So right now I’m just trying to get an idea of what I’m up against so I know what direction to go in so that I can handle it.

I have been seeing eagles fly over my house low enough that I know what they are, but my wildlife rehab friend says the eagles would rather have fish than my chickens but I'm not ruling out anything right now, but whatever it was did take it into the woods and it ran because I was right behind it. It even took that rooster with the cat sitting close by, the cat told me where it went. But since you know it is around dusk then have the gun ready and sneak early into your hiding spot and hopefully where it does not see you come into the area and just wait for it. Whatever got this rooster had to be large enough to go with him he was a big rooster and heavy it dragged him for a little ways because of the feathers on the ground but I finally lost the trail. Good luck, you'll get it or at least see what it is you are up against. If it is a coyote or fox let me know, I'll pass along my "secret".

yes,please let me know.
i know,i try to keep my birds safe and these were "extra" roosters that run loose.
it has taken 3 birds:
same time each morning-daybreak
same place-just outside of the dogs perimeter.a few chickens wonder over too far out of range.
all that is left is several spots of feathers trailing down to the woods.
it does make me mad but now i see it as a challenge to try and out fox it.i was ready before daylight this morning but nothing.it just got the 3rd one yesterday and before it took 3 days to strike again.i will be waiting with live(it is safe) bait again in the morning.

as far as game cams,i have one.i see regularly red fox,grey fox and coyotes.they have never come inside of the main pasture where the dogs and chickens are.the chickens that got gone were actually outside of the pasture but i know that now it is coming back on a regular basis,it will eventually try to get to the coops.

There is a thread just for asking and answering this type of preditor questions. Do you think that they could answer questions concerning lost New Hampshire chickens better then this thread which is about Heritage Rhode Island chickens?
Or perhaps it might be easier just to start a thread of your own.

No I believe that was directed towards me.

henpecked, if you go back and look at post 1413 (I think) a post was made about a bird that was lost, a RIR. The conversation at that point went in the direction of lost birds. Yes there is a place for that kind of question on this site and I must have gotten lost in the moment to have asked such an insensitive question about a BR or NH on a RIR thread. I guess if I had said that it was one of my Mohawks and not my Good Shepard BR's or German NH's you would have had little to add. Let me correct that for you....

Guys, I thought I lost a NH and BR the other day but when I checked tonight it was two of my Mohawks that the predator got.

They smell your scent on the Game Cam.
Get some scent killer and wipe it on the game cam after you mount it.

So listen to what is going on around you, the crows fuss sometimes too, especially if it is a hawk or owl. I will go out there this afternoon and see if my bait was taken, if not will have to put out some more in another spot. I'm going to talk to a friend of mine that has an outdoor furnace and see if he wants to clear out some trees this winter for his furnace, will help me push the brush and woods back a little. I appreciate all the info everyone is giving on this thread, you don't ever know what will work but we're in it together sounds like.
