The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

It took me a little searching but over the last year I was able to purchase an older Sportsman (plywood cabinet) in perfect working order for a very good price. I then converted it to electronic themostat. It has a bucket humidifier. The electronic thermostat holds temp dead on. I just glance at it once a day to make sure it is working.
A couple months ago I was able to purchase a used 6 Tray Sportsman Hatcher from a gentleman I sold some birds to. Also at a very good price. I added the bucket humidifier to it. It has a clear door and it also holds perfect temp and humidity.
One of the things I like about them is how steady the humidity stays. Even during a big hatch the hatcher will only go up a point or two.
I have less money in them combined than one new Sportsman. That includes the upgraded themostat and the humidifiers.
Keep your eyes open they are out there. I found both of mine by asking around and letting people know I was looking.

If I knew how nice the cabinet bators were to use I would have changed over years ago.
I have hatched hundreds of chicks in foam bators with good success, but it takes a lot more monitoring.

The question was asked what incubator we liked, her is my story--

I was new to hatching chickens. I had 3 heritage hens and 1 rooster that were doing what came natural. So, I bought a new 1502 GFQ incubator and saved up 38 eggs over three weeks time. I kept them in an egg carton that I placed in a cool place and tilted different angles everyday. When I placed them in the incubator and tried to keep the humidity stable I had a difficult time. Ultimately I bought an automatic waterier thing (you know with the float valve in it and a 5 gal pail suppling the water). With it I was able to keep heat and humidity perfectly. And at the end of 21 days I hatched 36 of the original 38 eggs. I like the new 1502 series.

Wolford Kittle

Does anyone know more about this person, history, birds, etc? I am fascinated by this breeder and would like to know more about his strain, where they came from, where they are now, that kind of thing. Anyone know something about him?

I'm confused Fred. Was Rademacher even raising reds pre 1938?

I haven't heard of the line myself, but then again I an still new to the old strains. My RC reds are from Mr. Rademacher though.

edited to add; The birds do look very nice though.

I have a few of Wolford's birds. He lives in Burgettstown really close to Dick Horstman and about 50 or so miles from me.
A guy in Maryland talks with Mr. Kittle all the time. If you are interested, I will get Mr. Kittles phone number and PM it to you. He is in his 90's and about ready to give up. I think he has talked with my friend about this. The one thing that I can tell you about his birds is that the pullets all started to lay just a little over 6 months. I had a coon visit a few months ago and now I only have 6 or 7 of the hens. I can get them though anytime I want them from my friend in Maryland.
Let me know if you would like Mr. Kittle's number or I can put you in touch with my friend in Maryland. He sold quite a few of them last year.

The Kittle line is not a old line. The son of the old Mr. Kittle crossed three different lines together a few years ago. I would concentrate on Racamaker, which he has breed about 35 years. He got his from the old timers in St Paul Minnesota Franklin J. Young and Rev John Melchert. He has had a great show career won many thophys. Don Nelson has breed his for over 20 years in Rhode Island and is still fooling with them either on someone elses farm or his place. New York Reds has his line as well and just needs to get in the grove as he knows how to breed Reds and is a master breeder of everything I have some of his bantams.

The Greg Chamness line is my old line from about 16 years ago and then there is a line in Callahan Florida that I helped start 18 years ago with Brian Simmons.

You have a good line in Bill Bennett in Georgia he has breed them very well for over 20 years and I like them very much.

There is the Ricky Bates line its kind of new as Ricky did not have them that long befir he died he got them from the St. Romains in middle Lousiana who got some from me about 14 years ago, but I have lost track on what they did with them. The young boy was the super star in breeding and he is out of chickens and off to college. I like this strain and it has promise and its in good hands with Mr. Fogerty.

Thats about it in R I Reds. There is a strain I am going to see in about a half a hour with Matt 1616. They are killers and are my old line back in this humid climate and should in two to three years be back to what I had be for I retired from large fowl 12 years ago.

Then there are the Mohawk Red Bantams which came from the Reese large Fowl. That's a mystery. How and why did they come along. Some crank shrunk them down 30 years ago to make a bantam. I hear he is friends with Joe Ipswich on Fish River. Cant be leave every think he says he is getting old and senile.

Have a nice day. Hope this helps the history of the current R I Red large fowl. If you got some enjoy them and more than ever share them with the rookies this spring who want them.

Bob,
Speaking of sharing them this spring,I won't be hatching large numbers but I would very much like to help others get started. However the thought of shipping chicks is a little intimidating. Can any of y'all give me some advise on shipping them?

Well, I got a young trio a few weeks ago down in Kentucky. The story is hard to piece together. The lady had them for a few years. Says she got them from the BlueGrass Poultry show, in Frankfort, I believe, 3 or 4 years ago but was a bit foggy about the details of the seller. She was getting out of heritage birds to focus more on her dairy cows. I tried to draw out of her as many details as I could. I already asked MYReds if he perhaps sold at that show and he said no, he had not ever been there. My second "name" to investigate was the possibility of them being from the elderly Wolford Kittle's line and some of the details suggest they may be.

They're gonna take some work, maybe lots of work. We'll grow them out over the winter and see what we get come spring. If they pan out, fine, but if they don't there's little ventured and no harm no foul, or fowl. LOL
