Korim’s jaw unhinged in a horrible scream as half a dozen kids popped through his mirror and onto the gold at his feet. His brain was no longer in control of his arms, and they held the mirror handle steadily in the air to let his passengers through while the rest of him was in total panic mode.
Kyle smiled grimly at his sudden terror. “Honestly should expect these sorts of things by now,” he said. “Take! Fred! How did you get here?”
Cam stomped over to Noah, who had fallen on the gold with a thud and was staring around widely. Anger burned in her cheeks. Her next words rose hot and loud, a demand.
“Noah! Why did...”
“Cam!” Noah said, hugging her legs and shoving his face into the stained fabric of the dress. Tears rolled down his rain-washed cheeks. An adult... no a teenager, they were kids who had learned how to be adults and had his fullest respect. A teenager he finally recognized. In this horrible place. She’d know how to get home.
“You leave me like that?” Cam asked, her voice barely a whisper, looking down at the boy, forlorn, bloody, hungry. A boy who’d been in the same places as she was. A boy who was equally lucky to be alive. Cam choked down her anger just as guilt took its place in her throat. I’ve been so selfish. He’s just a little boy. These other people, they didn’t ever give up on trying to find their siblings.
“Noah,” she whispered, crouching beside him, giving him a shoulder to cry on. “I’m here... I’m here... we’ll get you home...” Or at least... I’ll try...
