Kipp led them down the hill, though he was edging further into the forest as they went. Both in the hopes of getting them out of sight, and the slope seemed to be gentler though the woods. Where it wasn't there were at least trees and things to grab on to. The hike down the hill seemed like it would never end, but he kept walking, putting one heavy foot in front of the other.
The final drop off to the sandy river bank which was mostly made of tangled roots and loose pine needles, wasn't much more than a three foot drop. He decided it was probably easy enough for the others to get down on their own, and hopped the short distance down.
Kipp's knees gave under him, and he fell to the ground, shivering with pain and exhaustion. They'd made it to their goal, the river, an imagined safe haven. That was good enough for him. He knew that they should keep going to find shelter, but just breathing felt like too much of an effort.
