The house next door is up for sale....

I was thinking of flying up there to take a look but the runway at L26 (hesperia airport) isn't so great... the LAST thing I need is a prop strike and higher insurance rates...

I thought about it! Very seriously! But, money is too tight for us right now. If they'd wait 6 more mos, maybe, but now there is no way.

You need to do some homework on this - fast. I just put a bid on a foreclosure where $120K was owed. I lost my bid, but they did accept $65K. These banks want this stuff off their books. Put in an offer way low - even 1/2 price and see what comes back - you never know in this environment. I would imagine that in CA there are tons of foreclosures. We don't have many here.

Good luck, I would put up a nice big sign where it could be clearly seen:
Fresh eggs available soon - or soemthing along those lines so they're KNOW clearly in advance that there are chickens around. (even if you don't plan to sell eggs just put out a sign!

I didn't know the runway was bad. It is a busy airport and medical helicopter fly out of there all the time. The paving doesn't seem bad, but I only go there for breakfast.

The house is less than a mile from the airport.

Tipsydog...I will look into it and see. DH is laid off, so he wouldn't qualify. I have been working part-time and will start full-time in a week. My name isn't on our current house (he bought it before we met) and my salary would qualify. I'm just not sure if the short time at the employer would be ok (if I waited a month or so). My credit is fine as well. It'd be a great idea though! Maybe his parents would go in on it with us as an investment property.

Wildsky...I will have to look into the city laws before putting up a sign. I am sure it is legal, but I'd hate to get in trouble and draw a red flag if I am not allowed to sell eggs.

The runway isn't bad, but the roads to get there are. Heck, all streets in Hesperia are bad!!!! They ought to start naming the potholes.

If the high desert weren't so far from friends and we didn't owe so much on this place, I would really be looking hard at that!

Many of our roads have been repaved in the past year or so due to funding the city had put aside. Some are still leave a bit to be desired. Ranchero should greatly improve though since the city has 100% funding for the Ranchero underpass at the train tracks. Construction is suppose to start very soon!!

Yea..the distance can be a pain. I have been going to school in Fullerton (71 miles one way). Luckily that is not on a regular basis anymore. My commute to work in Redlands will only be 38 miles each way, which isn't bad at all for a SoCal commute. Plus, the traffic is minimal. David was working in Riverside for years and years and the commute was 42 miles one way...on a bad traffic day it was a little over an hour. Most days it was 45 min to an hour.

I really like the water and air quality (our tap water actually tastes GOOD) and the 3 seasons (and the occasional year with truly 4 seasons.

). We are blessed with nice neighbors (not all are friendly, but none go out of their way to be rude). I am just hoping that the new ones are just as friendly. The new ones on the other side moved in a few months back. We gave them free eggs and DH said that we sell them. They didn't like the idea of buying fresh eggs. The next day they came home with a bantam rooster and hen.

I take them free eggs sometimes since I feel bad that they have one bantam hen for a family of 4.
