We've shot a lot with shotguns over the past few years. They have tended to stay in the woodlots and circle around, trying to evade the blockers. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.
40-50 is fine but make sure you have a good broadhead. I’ve been really impressed with the rage extreme which cuts a 2” hole
i went back and took the same hog with my .44 mag and turned out the hide was 3” thick in many areas

I got very frustrated chasing a hog for over 11 hours having my broadheads bounce off like a mosquitoes

For rifles there is a little bit of everything, but the most popular by a bit would be .243. I personally use a .223 most of the time, but also have a .243, 25/06, and a .222.
