The inevitable has finally happened....

Please don't catch and relocate. I'm tired of folks dumping their problems in my neighborhood, leaving me to deal with their problem(s).

x2.

I once met a dude who used to keep big sponges soaked in beef fat. Stray dog came around, he'd leave the sponge out, the dog would eat the sponge...and the dog would eventually die in agony. (Farmers really hate stray dogs.)

If people don't want an animal around, they should take some personal responsibility and either put it down or relocate it to a shelter. Because by "dropping it off" they're merely deluding themselves that it's going to live out its life happily. In reality, it's probably going to starve to death in a new area, or people are going to kill it.

Very true. Met a woman who was a kid (elementary school) in the 60's I think. She had a few white pet rabbits during this time. Tired of caring for them she let them out "free" to enjoy the rabbit life....Umm, yeah, probably for about as long as it took a predator to find those bright white rabbits :/  Granted, she was a younger kid and likely didn't think to far in the future at that point, but some predators ate well that night.

Ok, normally I’m also one to jump all over the term “re-locate” but notice the rest of the post.

The only thing to do with cats is trap and relocate. Most local humane societies will take them for free. I had a really bad cat problem.....crazy cat lady neighbor....the humane society near me will take one a day

Re-locating a cat to a humane society is totally acceptable in my opinion. Hopefully the cat will go to a good home, at worst it will be humanely euthanized.

Feral cat populations are not always a horrible thing either... they control rodents that carry lots of nasty dieseases and pests. Only becomes a huge issue when their population gets totally out of control.

Edit to add: yes, BrandonVercnocke, when you’re catching a cat every night for a week running in your live traps, that’s a totally out of control feline population!

Why so many lights 24/7?
Chickens need a dark period.

Just realized I wrote wrong. Thanks for asking that! I meant it's like Christmas 365 days because we have lights on during the fall, wintertime, and early spring. They have 11 hrs to sleep and then the lights turn on.

Cat said...OH!! not a great litter box!!! :gig
x2 :gig:gig:gig:lau:lau:lau I can tell you that specific cat has not been around since.

Getting the cat into care and control of an agency such as that, for possible finding of a new situation such as a barn cat program or organized feral colony is not "relocating" it.

THIS! We live on a pretty large farm out in the middle of nowhere. Perfect for people who think 'oh they have a farm, they probably wouldn't mind a new cat or dog'. More often than not it's just cats, but dogs on occasion as well (and once, even 2 roosters!). The dogs we were able to find homes for, but most of the cats dumped off are not friendly at all. Some were killed by predators in the area over time, and some were actually aggressive towards us and our animals, so we had to kill them as well. Though one cat that was dumped off the other year we kept because he ran up to our house immediately and acted like he knew us lol. So he was lucky in being dumped off...but most times animals that are dumped off don't have a happy ending in store for them.
I don't know if people just don't think about it...or they just absolutely don't care about the animal and what will happen to it? I dunno, that's a big peeve of mine.

I think the “relocate” was intended to mean to a humane society if you read the post where it was first mentioned. I think it’s a miscommunication, and that the poster who first used that term didn’t realize that often when it is used here it’s people just randomly dumping the problem animal (cat, coon, possum, etc) “out in the woods” or “in someone else’s neighborhood”.

@SniperGoose
I know very well what happens to “re-located” animals. I am also in favor of shooting dogs (even those owned by a neighbor) harassing livestock. I also live on a farm with lots of livestock. I am not in favor of “relocating” anything unless it is done by a licensed professional, but in this instance I really doubt that the person who made the comment means it that way. Please believe me in saying I am right there with you in “catch and don’t release”.
