The Journey of rebuilding

thank you, it's been a long time coming (since storm sandy!),,The original barn was a prefab which came painted, I tried to match the paint best I could, but wasn't happening, so came as close as we could, and yes I decided to go with the olive trim, saw a building this combo and liked it.

Right now I have 14 chickens, 7 / 1 year olds, 3 / 13 week olds, and 4 / 8 week olds.. their inside area will be 9 x 12 - + a few inches. up to the left side barn door. the rest will be storage.

Since we started the rebuild, my husband built a temp coop INSIDE their run (can't free range to many critters),,I've integrated the 13 week olds with the older girls, but still separate at nite since there isn't enough room on the side the older ones are in for everyone...The 8 week olds, I FINALLY got outside, bought a small used hutch, that they go in at nite, put them in the smaller outside temp run during the day..So switching is rather a pain!

The 'run' is 12 x 24, built like Fort Knox:) This rebuild is on it's 6th week, but keep in mind my husband and his brother only really do the major stuff on sundays.
THis week we'll get in the electric, I'm working on inside stuff. Below is a pic of the Temp coop which I'm going to dismantle when the youngest girls are finally integrated..

The first pic is the finished temp coop, the big girls go in the left side, the younger ones on the right..

I Know there are threads on insulation, I'm debating whether to insulate the NEW barn, it wasn't last winter, and altho cold, it seemed ok ..We are plywooding up all the walls whereas last year they weren't..so I'm rather thinking, to 'not' go with insulation..Thoughts?

The coop should be fine without insulation. Chickens can handle well below freezing. The important thing is that they are dry and out of the wind.

This is one of my favorite coop/runs, glad to see you were able to get it rebuilt.

Is there ventilation along the eaves?
Is there a pop door to the run and do they have 24/7 access?

thanks, to answer above questions, The pop door into the run is right inside the run door on the left..plus I have two big double doors that open into the run..Ventilation, vent on the left top of building and on the right end of the building put in a jealousy (sp) window for ventilation.

This past weekend, we got the back of the shed shingled, ran into some problems so it took awhile!
Got the electricity hooked up.

Below are some shots of the inside, not quite finished but you get the idea..Tonite, I'm going to put Snowy (Rooster), Birch, Ruby my 15 wk olds and Thelma who is a pain to get into the temp coop, into the big new building..Can't put shavings down yet because we found after having a horrific rain storm last nite, thefront part leaked a little despite being tar papered...

Sick of rotating chickens,,so the "babies" will stay in the 15 wk olds old temp coop,,And hopefully EVERYONE but the babies will be in the BIG NEW area by Friday (no rain predicted for the weekend)

Above I got artsy with the wall:) EXIT is where the pop door is

Two big windows facing the house

Roost/poop board/nesting box, again got a little artsy with the wall

Looking straight from the right side of shed which is storage area, to the double doors leading to run
it's about 10 x 12 for the chickens

Jalousie pronounced almost like jealousy...slats of glass with no seal...we used to call them 'Ja Lousy' when we had them in winter in northern Florida cause they were lousy at keeping out cold drafts.

we finally finished yesterday YIPEEE:)

A day after I posted the above pics, I couldn't take it anymore:) So tired of rotating chicks:) Soooo even tho I didn't have shavings down, I put th 3/ middle aged chickes IN the new coop area for the nite,,Poor things, they were so un used to foam flooring, wouldnt budge, so I picked them up and put them on the roost/ next morning they wouldn't get down LOL..

So that day, I said to the hubby, that's it, they are all going in there, (except the 4/ 8 wk olds)...So I spread all the shavings, hung waterer/feeder, and opened up the double doors to the run..OMG why DIDN"T I HAVE A CAMERA???

One of the australorps, stood in the middle of the doorway just looking back and forth , I swear in awe LOL..the others crowded behind her, and they all raced in there ...They love it,,in fact half the time they are hanging out INSIDE vs being outside LOL..

I love my rebuild, will post some more pics later...Yeah we went overboard, but ahh it's worth it,,I'm getting LOADS more eggs the past few days for sure.

Now to integrate the 8 week olds this weekend!

I want to thank this forum, got so many great and creative ideas on my rebuild:)
