The khaki-Campbell duck Thread !!!!!!!!

Mine love peas. 3 out of 4 will eat from my hand. Just don't feed them to many a day.

when we let them play in the sink for their swim time we put in little pieces of lettuce . They dunk, swam and nibbled it all up. We have not gotten them to eat from our hands like chicks would do. I am not sure if its a " duck thing" not to eat from your hand at this age... being new to ducks.. maybe someone else might know why they don't eat from your hand . I also make sure I have chick grit in their food area since we allowed them treats. I also sprinkle it in their food.

Mine love frozen sweet peas defrosted, strawberries chopped real small, & mealworms. KC stay pretty skittish. Mine is almost 9 wks & once I catch her, she settles down & will snuggle, but I have to catch her 1st. Before I put their bowl down, I wld make them eat out of my hand 1st :)!

I wouldnt give them peas unless you mush them first (if they are still a few weeks old). Mushed bananas and tomatoes are fav as well as cottage cheese.

Mine are about 6-7 weeks old and huge. Today they found some peas outside in their run, and it rained last night, so they were floating around in the puddles! That was very fun to watch.

I took them out to my garden to teach them how to look for bugs. there aren't any plants planted yet, I still need to prep the ground, but I wanted to have them get a head start in finding slugs :) needless to say, they're not very sure on what they're supposed to do quite yet... But, I found them some worms and one slug, and they ate those. they had NO clue what I was trying to get them to do for a while, once one figured out I was dangling food in front of their face, they figured it out pretty quickly! Now for them to figure out how to find slugs on their own!

Oh, and ours aren't too keen on getting 'caught' either, but once we get them, they let us hold them. I'm glad they're not freaking out, bc we haven't really been holding them a lot since they have moved outside to the coop! much easier to hold when they're in the house and not completely wet and muddy all the time haha.

My chickens are the same.. catch me if you can... oh well.. i kind of like this.. we have only had the baby ducks a few days so one of them is so quiet one is LOUD and screams ! even when being cuddled. I hope she/he settles down in a few more days.

Well she is now the proud momma of 11 KC babies. Here are the proud parents showing off the first 5 that hatched:

She never went back to her nest after these 5 were hatched so I candled the remaining 6 eggs and all were internally and externally pipped. I ended up putting the eggs under one of my broody hens and the rest hatched out just fine. Word of warning to all - be very careful when handling babies around their mother. When I brought the remaining ducklings over to her she came at me and latched on to my arm with her bill and legs kicking away.Other than that she had no problem accepting the 6 ducklings and all are thriving wonderfully.

Hi everyone,

I'm a completely new duck owner and loving it at the moment! I've recently got 4 ducks from a friend who was looking to offload their ducks from their newly purchased farm. I've established that the 2 white ones are definitely pekins but I'm having trouble identifying the breed of the brown ones. Can someone help me??

Thanks!
Hello and welcome to BYC

My guess is a Khaki Campbell.

I have a question. My Khaki Campbell ducklings are almost 2 weeks old. I got them a couple days ago. Right now they are very skittish and run away when I put my hand in the brooder. When I place them on my lap they calm down for a couple minutes and then freak out again. Is there a tried-and-true way to calm these ducks and get them to be comfortable with you?
Patience, treats and keeping the same routine every day is what I've found to work. Meal worms and peas. Our KC's are 6 wks old. We aren't exactly snuggling yet but they come running when I shake the meal worm container and say 'treat.' They are still skiddish but each day brings more progress.

CONGRATULATIONS! Sorry about your arm, but what a good momma she is

Quote: We handled ours daily and it still hasn't quit freaking out. I think some of them just might be jumpy? I have a Pekin and a Swedish that are a year old now that we bought together as ducklings. Handled the same and everything, and the Swedish is very standoffish while the Pekin is almost like a dog and loves the attention.
