We tried nesting boxes with our ducks, they didnt use them. They made their own "nest" in a trough in the barn and they use that... We keep oyster shell available at all times, havent had any issues with the drakes getting sick from it. We dont use layer pellets, so i dont know what to tell you about that.. we use a mix of different stuff my fiances mixes together at work.. He works at a feed mill & makes our feed.I am wondering if I should prepare for my duck to be laying eggs soon? Did anyone start their on layers pellets at about 17 weeks or do you just wait until they lay their first egg? I really worry about this excessive calcium for drakes controversy. The majority seem to say that it's ok to feed them all layers pellets as long as they get extra veggies and can forage etc. but I am still confused about whether or not to allow them access to oyster shell, especially since I just have the one duck. Any ideas? Also it seems that ducks might not need an actual nesting box? Mine get locked in their house at night which has a wood floor and straw bedding. I thought she might just lay in the straw but I really don't know. If they do need a box, how tall should the walls of this box be?
