The khaki-Campbell duck Thread !!!!!!!!

I am wondering if I should prepare for my duck to be laying eggs soon? Did anyone start their on layers pellets at about 17 weeks or do you just wait until they lay their first egg? I really worry about this excessive calcium for drakes controversy. The majority seem to say that it's ok to feed them all layers pellets as long as they get extra veggies and can forage etc. but I am still confused about whether or not to allow them access to oyster shell, especially since I just have the one duck. Any ideas? Also it seems that ducks might not need an actual nesting box? Mine get locked in their house at night which has a wood floor and straw bedding. I thought she might just lay in the straw but I really don't know. If they do need a box, how tall should the walls of this box be?

We tried nesting boxes with our ducks, they didnt use them. They made their own "nest" in a trough in the barn and they use that... We keep oyster shell available at all times, havent had any issues with the drakes getting sick from it. We dont use layer pellets, so i dont know what to tell you about that.. we use a mix of different stuff my fiances mixes together at work.. He works at a feed mill & makes our feed.

Perhaps. Khaki's usually loose interest after a while. It is best to put the eggs under a chicken or in an incubator if you want to hatch some.

I have one that started laying last week at around 16 weeks old. They're all still on grower until the trough is empty. No big deal.
I've always just had one feed out for males and females. I don't see how you could do it any other way. And the drakes have always been fine.

As for a nesting box - mine have one but don't use it. They'll lay wherever they want.

Does anyone know what these guys might be mixed with?
I bought "Khaki campbells" and had my fiance pick them up because I couldnt make it there.
This is what he brought home. Had I gone, I would have never brought them home..

The woman told me she bought them from a hatchery and that they are "pure" khaki campbells but Im sure they are some kind of khaki campbell mix, they lay pretty consistently, and every single one of them has been fertile.. but what in the world are they lol.

They're pretty cool looking. One male, two female?
No idea what they're crossed with but the profile of the leftmost looks runner-ish.

Can anyone post a picture of a KC egg? My ducks are 22 weeks and housed with Chickens and Mallard ducks, just want to see what their eggs look like.

thanks, yep, one male & 2 females. I have an egg in the incubator that should hatch in like a week, Im very curious to see what their ducklings look like. I was wondering about runner myself, but they only walk like that once in a while. I wonder if there is somewhere I can get a dna test lol..
