The khaki-Campbell duck Thread !!!!!!!!

My ducks are 13 wks old. I have 4kc hens, 4 white layers hens, 2 buffs hens, 1 white layer drake. They need to be incorporated into the bigger coop because the girls are getting very loud. We're in the country but our neighbors aren't that far away. My only problem is that I feed my chickens layer pellets. I know I won't be able to keep the ducks out of it. Do you think it would harm them if I switched over to strictly layer pellets? It would make my life much easier and hopefully quieter. The other option is to build another coop on the opposite side of the property but it wouldn't be as safe because we can't afford to buy the supplies. My hubby wasn't to keen of the idea either.

I have chickens, ducks and turkeys and didn't want to be buying several different feeds. I talked to our local feed mill and they mix a custom blended 18% "all flock" for me that takes care of all the critters.

KC lay so many eggs they need the calcium in the layer pellets. Mine will lay soft shelled eggs if I don't feed them layer feed, even if they have crushed oyster shell available.

Do yours lay all year round? Mine turned 20wks back in September and I've yet to get an egg! I know it's winter but still...thought I would have gotten at least a few in the fall last year...

Mine just began to lay again last week. I even had a heat lamp on for them because it was so cold here. I read on this board that ducks adjust and don't lay in the winter as much. I am fine with that because last year mine laid all year and one of my girls had a really hard time with molting. She had to use her wings to help her walk around. I brought her inside for a month and nursed her back to health. She lived in my spare bathtub. If my girls need to take off from laying in the winter so be it-much easier than an inside duck.

I get the winter thing...I just wish I had gotten SOMETHING from Sept or Oct to at least November. It was weird because she laid 1 egg in the snow one morning, it was frozen solid and even frozen in the ground. I couldn't get it and the next morning she laid another and then that was it. Hopefully all the girls will pick up soon. This weather isn't helping though, wish it would warm up soon.

I am new to KC and im thinking of getting a couple females from our local feed store that's having chicks and ducks soon. I have a few questions im wondering if someone could answer them for me!

Do KC need to have a fenced in area or will they just roam but stay close by?

How many is a good amount to start out with? (we only want to do them for pets and eggs)

How many eggs do they produce typically a day?

Can KC be super friendly as a pet if handled from a duckling?

Last one...How old do KC start producing eggs!!
Thanks sooooo much for who ever can answer these questions for me!!!

My Khakis stay on my large lawn but I do have a spring-fed pond they spend lots of time on. I have a fenced area where they are fed. I lock the gate at the afternoon feeding so I can get them in the coop at night. They have access to water when inside the fence. They are next to impossible to herd off the pond after dark so that is why I lock them in at the afternoon feeding, the time which varies by season.

I have five ducks and one drake but would be happy with three ducks for just eggs and insect control. They are excellent foragers and eat snails, slugs and beetle grubs, an added benefit. They are a flock animal so if something were to happen to one duck if you only have two the remaining one will become very lonely and you would need to find another duck of similar age for company.

During the longer days you can expect 1 egg per day per duck with an occasional once every day for some. They will stop laying some during the molt and during the short winter days. Though they can be enticed to lay in winter with artificial light I don't recommend it as it is stressful for them, they do need the rest.

Mine don't like to be picked up and never did. However, I have read on some posts that their Khakis don't mind being handled. They are a naturally nervous duck and I am satisfied to enjoy them from a few feet away.

They should start producing eggs anywhere from 18 t0 22 weeks old.

Good luck!
