My ducks are 13 wks old. I have 4kc hens, 4 white layers hens, 2 buffs hens, 1 white layer drake. They need to be incorporated into the bigger coop because the girls are getting very loud. We're in the country but our neighbors aren't that far away. My only problem is that I feed my chickens layer pellets. I know I won't be able to keep the ducks out of it. Do you think it would harm them if I switched over to strictly layer pellets? It would make my life much easier and hopefully quieter. The other option is to build another coop on the opposite side of the property but it wouldn't be as safe because we can't afford to buy the supplies. My hubby wasn't to keen of the idea either.
KC lay so many eggs they need the calcium in the layer pellets. Mine will lay soft shelled eggs if I don't feed them layer feed, even if they have crushed oyster shell available.
Mine just began to lay again last week. I even had a heat lamp on for them because it was so cold here. I read on this board that ducks adjust and don't lay in the winter as much. I am fine with that because last year mine laid all year and one of my girls had a really hard time with molting. She had to use her wings to help her walk around. I brought her inside for a month and nursed her back to health. She lived in my spare bathtub. If my girls need to take off from laying in the winter so be it-much easier than an inside duck.
I am new to KC and im thinking of getting a couple females from our local feed store that's having chicks and ducks soon. I have a few questions im wondering if someone could answer them for me!![]()
Do KC need to have a fenced in area or will they just roam but stay close by?
How many is a good amount to start out with? (we only want to do them for pets and eggs)
How many eggs do they produce typically a day?
Can KC be super friendly as a pet if handled from a duckling?
Last one...How old do KC start producing eggs!!
Thanks sooooo much for who ever can answer these questions for me!!!
