The khaki-Campbell duck Thread !!!!!!!!

So being around here I do raise Chickens. I have 7 hens and they all molted at the same time this late fall so I have been buying eggs for about 2 months. Just got 3 laid yesterday so hopefully they are picking back up. I have read that these khaki ducks produce over 300 eggs a year and I am wondering if maybe getting a couple would help fill the egg void when the molt happens or if I should just try to stager the ages of my chickens (which they are but they are all February hatches I think). I have raised some Peking ducks for meat before and I do recall that they were very fond of feed so I got away from them- do the khakis eat as much as the peking and do they make a lot of noise if you only have 2 or 3? Also interested in the advantages/disadvantages of this breed of duck. And how do they grow out for meat production? Thanks

Ducks stop laying in winter if you do not provide supplemental light, just like your chickens did.

You should give your chickens a light on a timer to extend their day, preferably at the BEGINNING of the day, so they can go to roost normally in the evening.

My female Khaki ducks are quieter than roosters, but by no means silent. They talk a lot, to eachother and at any noise or movement nearby. 6 females were giving me about 3 dozen eggs a week at peak production this summer, got my last eggs 2 weeks ago, right after Christmas.

They dress out pretty small, my extra drakes were less than 4 lb. dressed.

I found with my Runners, it's not so much the light as the temperature.

My drakes were 2.5 pounds dressed out and that was when they got their curly feather. Not worth the effort of plucking IMO.

Mine lay like clockwork, but I haven't had them long so I can't comment. I staggered the age of my chickens so I don't have everyone freeloading at the same time.

Hey guys and gals. A while back we lost one of our boys to predators. Ad of right now my lone **** is doing fine chilling with my hens (chickens) however come breeding season I assume he will need to be separated out
I do not however want the poor boy to be all alone forever and so we're trying to find out where to get female kc chicks. Does anyone know where i might be able to get them, either online or in southern NH or northern MA?

So how are they on feed conversion to eggs compared to chickens. It seemed to me that my Pekins that I raised for meat ate more than the chickens and I am wondering as far as economics how the ducks stack up to chickens. Have your ducks started back laying yet? Seems like the chickens are waking back up and laying again with the longer days starting. And how are the duck eggs as far as size and taste compared to chicken eggs?
Any cons to keeping ducks for eggs versus chickens?

I have 3 KC, and 2 Rouen, along with 30 chickens. They are noisy, soon as they spot me they start yacking. They even go around to the backside of thier run, where they can see the back door, and watch. They do 'eat' I give my whole flock a custom treat mix I have put together. Out of the 5 ducks I get 4 to five a day. Out of my hens, half are starting back to laying, after thier molt. Usually takes a couple months. 2/3'rds of my flook are winter hardy, the rest are warmer weather. But here in Arkansas, you never know the weather. Even my new hens from the spring, had recently gone through another juvenile molt. So with everything going on, I get about 15-18 eggs a day. Some of my customers prefer the duck eggs, they are awesome for baking. It doesn't matter to me either way. For meat birds, I would go with the Roeuns. They are twice the size of the KC. My flock is all for egg, but a few are combo breeds. I will eventually butcher some, but not any time soon.

As far as feed conversion- Put them out in a duck pasture, with lots of appropriate plants. You will not need much supplementary feed during the growing season, they really like to forage for clover, grasses, tasty weeds, bugs, worms & etc.

2 above zero here this fine sunny morning. Just took some photos of my Khakis on their pond. They like staying on the water in weather like this so I feed them in the water where they enter from their coop.
