The kids and I processed our very first chicken!!

Oh my goodness, Congrats! I have not gotten up the nerve to try this yet, and I'm a grown adult, these kids have more nerve than I have! I have more roosters than my hens can handle!

Thanks everyone--most of my friends think I'm nuts!!! It does feel very rewarding!!! Our chicks are about 9 weeks old--the three meaties are easily 4 times bigger than all the rest. This one weighed 4.5 pounds after it was cleaned.

What a great lesson for the kids! I just processed our first chicken with my teen aged nephew, and kids (7 and 10 yrs) today too. It will definitely be a Mother's Day to remember!

Congrats! It's not the easiest of jobs but the sense of satisfaction knowing you have produced your own food in a humane fashion makes it worth it!

Great job. I have a separate pen right now with my excess roos.... just haven't gotten up the nerve to off them yet. It is hard for me to do for some reason.... It wouldn't be my first time killin and processing a critter as I hunt deer, hogs, and squirrel...... but I guess I have got attached to these guys and they are pretty. I guess I can't wait too much longer though feed cost is gettin to me.

Love that first pic - definitely not one you normally see in a family photo album! Good on you for involving them at such an early age - you should be proud of them and yourself!
