The Last Spark
At the start of everything, a group of humans were gifted immense powers. These powers would give them the abilities to control the nature around them, to do things normal beings could not. And while most humans with such power become corrupt, the early mages did not, rather taking to helping their fellow beings. They controlled life and death, the waters of the world, along with the foundation of it. Fire and air, and darkness and light as well, all were manipulated by the mages.
For thousands of years the mages of the world helped either directly or from the shadows. They helped those who could not help themselves; they shaped the world and as such became well known, famous even. The most famed mage of all was of course Merlin, who served his king dutifully, assisting in his noble cause. But over the years this fame turned to hate, as the true power of the mages was realized. So the mages of the world hid their true selves, their power from the world for a time. Afraid of what ordinary humans would do to them in their hatred for their power. For centuries this worked without fail, they shared their true nature only to those who could be trusted. They hid alongside human beings, living ordinary lives and the world for such time was at peace.
But it is human nature to envy. To want what others have, and simply put, most humans would never become mages. It became harder to hide what they were amidst the modern world, in truth some were tired of hiding all together. Soon the world or at least those in power knew that there were mages in the world, they soon knew of the power that they could wield. Now two groups with two very different ideas where the mages are concerned have formed. One private, a hate organization grew in power and popularity, framing the mages with crimes of their own. They terrorized cities, countries, exploiting horrendous acts to frame the helpless mages, who could only try to stop their name from being blotched out of all its good and fall into a pit of gloom and darkness. And now that has happened. Most mages have been killed, but several have come together in a city in the United States. Where the second group still hunts them but for a very different reason, this group led by a separate faction of the government. The government saw the power of the mages, and realizing they could become useful weapons, has recruited multiple mages from the city into their own ranks, particularly the darker ones, more sinister beings of the group. Death and Darkness became the two favorite choices for the government to recruit, more and more mages being torn apart.
Now do the last mages have to fight amongst themselves, but also the humans that they once served?

A girl, around 16, walked around her room impatiently. Alexandra had been irritated recently by their lack of action. They never did anything, just always answered her “We must wait. It is not wise to respond.” She shook her head that they let their name be corrupted while they just sat cooped up in a house. She thought of Matthew, her brother, who had left the week before. Everyone pretended not to know where he had disappeared, but everyone knew. He had been tantalized by the government’s intriguing promises, and had gone to join their side. He had sent someone else from the government to contact her, urging her to come along, leave the “Idiots” he had described alone. He described a life where the government would make them powerful, where they were safe. She nodded at the thought of that word. But then there were her friends, all the people who cared about her there. She remembered the caring Life Mage who always asked if she was ok and had always healed her when she fell sick. She also couldn’t forget about her best friend, Avery, who was the complete opposite of her yet they were best friends. The pranks they had played on others, all the braids they had given each other, and every single pillow fight the two had shared. Alexandra sighed, realizing she couldn’t give them up. She turned on the television, the box that communicated the outside world to her.
She blinked. Breathed. Her breaths came in short pants and tears welled to her eyes. Avery was on the screen, at least her corpse was. The anti-mage society had gotten her. Alexandra eyes turned into fiery ovals of rage, her hands trembling. She rushed at the TV, watching it in rage as it melted before her with a simple touch. It was all the stupid mages fault. The ones who said it was “safe” here. That everything would be alright.
