The Legbar Thread!

Nice color comparison! Punnett did a whole study on the light and dark down color in the Legbars. He said that Legbar lines got the dark down color from Dutch brown Leghorns that he imported and that light down color for the English Brown Leghorns. He prooved the light down color to be ressesive which I am sure is why we have beeing so much more of the dark down color in the USA.

P.S. My lightest one from GFF is on the right of the photo below, and yes I photo documented how they fethered out.
So what did the light one look like after it feathered out?

He is the light one at about 3 months old.

In March of 2012 later another CLB about 45 minutes from me hatched 7 CLB cockerels that she didn't want to keep. She saved me the lightest and darkest cockerel from that batch and I did a photo documentation on them and the light and dark GFF cockerel from January of 2012. In my small sample population of four cockerels the dark downed cockerels showed sharper red and chestnut colors. The reds and chestnut were a duller more washout out color on the light downed cockerel. That was the only differences that I really noticed.

I have noticed that a lot of the pullets are showing cresting that is about the color of the dark downed chicks. I have a theory that a pullet that is complete for the light down color with display a crest color that is the same color as seen on the light down chicks. All I have been seeing on the F1 generation is dark cresting, but my Cockerel I bred this year was the really dark one (two tot he left of the light cockerel above). Eventually I will find a light crested pullet and figure out what causes it. There is still a ton to learn about this breed. :)

So this is my theory - and since I am no expert breeder take all I say with a huge grain of salt. I am just surmising here.

This chick pic was taken august 29th. This is so far the creamiest male I have growing out. I have 1 more (maybe 2 or 3 but too young to tell for sure) that looks like he may turn out more cream than gold - they both are developing saddle feathers that are lighter than others and their chestnut shoulders are also not as developed. I think the lighter down may be good for the barring but the tone of the down has to be more towards a gray (silvery slate) as opposed to a brown to indicate a creamier colored adult bird. I have one that was light as a chick but more towards a brown and he is developing the gold spots in the secondaries already and he is about 1-2 weeks younger than the chick pictured above so I am surmising he will be more colorful as an adult. I have about 7 boys so making observations as I go. Not so much into the whole photo journal as I really don't think the photos really capture the finer details (plus I lost a bunch) I just watch and compare.

This is the male chick here that is turning out more gold than the one above. (I think) The female to his right is a cream hackle girl that I have posted prior. The boy to the left is also a bit lighter than this one and you can kinda see that his tone is just a bit grayer.

Most of the younger ones developing now look like they will be darker as they are from my gold girl. I plan on keeping the ones with the lightest hackles to breed forward for my breeding plan and keep and/or sell the others as layers. It'll be a few years and I am going to buy some boys from Greenfire to see what I get from that and for a bit of genetic diversity since I know what pens I have. It's all so very interesting.

I'll post this on the other site also

nice colors redchicken9

Thought I'd post an update on the boys. They're 7 1/2 weeks old now. Looks like Pitts out of the running for breeding. He's got a big crest but his comb is pushed over badly by it. Its too bad as he has the lightest color of the 3 so far. Excuse the couch with all the dog hair. I have 4 pugs and foster them as well. Dog hair is just a fact of life here.
Pitt is shown below

Depp and Clooney are still in the running.

Heres Depp:

Below is Clooney, his comb is larger, redder and looks fairly straight so far but he has the least crest. I took the pic when he was shaking himself in the last photo

Puglady -
The diagonal comb and fluffy crest and lighter feather development-- I have identical -- IDENTICAL - little guy out in the pen. I wonder if they are related --LOL. I'll try to get a picture.
