The Legbar Thread!

Now that the photo contest is over I can share! Yay! This little boy, Channing, had NO red, brown, or chestnut hint on him at birth so I've tagged him as a keeper. He's only about 4 weeks old now so I can't tell much but... :fl Some of his sisters: And a white sister that went to a pet home:
Rinda, I agree your chicks are beautiful. I hope this boy grows out o be as nice as your rooster.

here's one of my boys that i hope doesn't get anymore color. he is 12 weeks old i now. . I like his comb with the slits in the comb being the at the same depth and length of points are the same. now I'm just hoping the wave goes away. The 2ND pic shows the 6 points all though the front point is very small. His sickles are coming in and his earlobes are looking good so far, A light blue color. Father was yellow ears, mother had green tint lol the 3 smaller ones in the bottom pic to the right are 13 weeks old

i Disturbed nap time.
VERY nice Cockerels Steen! Looking forward to seeing them grow out.

I initially bought a trio from a local breeder. The other girl I had did not have any green pigmentation on her legs. (I say "had" because she was the unfortunate victim of a predator last week.)

I would have to contact my breeder to determine if she has had any others with this issue. I will try to take a better picture when I get home. Thanks!
So very sorry that you lost your favorite one. Ouch. that hurts.

I swear, some chickens have a sign on their backs: "I'm Expensive. Eat Me First."

or is it more 'sad but true'

How many are you planning to keeping for back-ups? The more you keep, the less likely a predator will get the one you like, its a clause in the chicken-math theorem set to ensure you maximize your chicken numbers.

Yes - it really made it worse that she was in the middle of a mixed bag group of juveniles at the time: 1 other (less cool) legbar female, 2 legbar males, 3 wheaten marans males, 3 BO females, 3 RIR females, 3 barnyard mutts... Which one did the predator zone in on? The BEST one of course. If any of the others had been taken, I would have grumbled a bit - but the loss of THIS one really ticked me off.

Presently I am terrified of predators. Almost paralyzed. I need to build a fortress and electrify it.... When I drive down the highway and see chickens in someone's yard, I get a bit of reassurance...but I feel sometimes like I am just preparing the smorgasbord for the racccoons and snakes and diseases. I need to snap out of it don't I??

You know, I really try NOT to let the fear of predators affect the lives that my chickens deserve to have. I free range the whole lot of them (47 total, at present). I've never had a problem during the day from wild predators. Not even the old, old granddaddy red tailed hawk that lives in our pasture. When we first got the chickens, I just KNEW he was going to be a problem, but he has never made one single try for them. I can only assume that we have enough other prey for him in the forms of snakes, field mice, etc. that he is satisfied.

My issue has been the night time predators. For various reasons, we are rebuilding our barn and so the chickens are all in temporary pens for the moment. Adults in one bigger pen down by our goats (across our pasture) and the juvies in another temporary pen which is literally feet off my back porch, up against the house. The adults have not had one single issue down where they are, which surprises me to be honest. This loss was from the juvie pen by the house. It happened on the one night that we didn't leave our big dog out for the night. (He usually sleeps outside.) I assume an owl got her, but do not know that for sure. We've left the dog out ever since then and haven't had any more problems.
