The Legbar Thread!

Here are my Barkies! Curtis was right! Almost a week after hatch their legs are dark, have feathers, and they have 5 toes! Their heads are a little bigger/rounder and their beaks are a bit smaller than Legbars too. The Barkies are the ones tucked into Mom, the one on the far left and way in the back are full CLBs (as well as the other 5 somewhere in all that fluff).

As promised, here's a look at Aretha, our 20-week old CL. She's been laying for 2 weeks, and is as sweet as pie.
Her comb kind of curves over--do you think I'll have trouble with it freezing in the winter time in Indiana?

Pay no attention to the camera hog that jumped in front while I was snapping this picture!

Sweet looking girls there! She is gold hackled but otherwise looks nice.

As far as the comb, if your coop is properly sealed and vented (no drafts but with ventilation along the roof eaves) and you don't have moisture problems in the coop you shouldn't have too much trouble with frozen combs.

So what is the personality on these birds. They have been suggested to me because I want blue egg layers. I like the way they look, but I want to make sure they are not going to terrorize my English Orps. Opinions please.

Hi, Kiniska.
I'm new to the whole chicken business, but we have 3 Cream Legbars as pets. We have handeled them since they were babies, and they are all 3 excellent mannered girls.
They are curious, capable fliers, they are busy foragers, they haven't gotten into fights with my other 5 pullets, and they are on the small side. They don't mind being petted, but are only mildly interested in being held.
I will say that one has charged the fence at the dog when it approached, but I've not seen that behavior any other time.

Very curious and inquisitive is the best way I can describe them. If you hand raise them then obviously they will be friendlier. Mine are not "lap chickens" but I don't raise my chickens that way. I can catch them if I need to, and can pet them if I have mealworms at hand, but they aren't particularly fond of petting or holding. I do not find them to be flighty or psychotic like my Ameraucana chicks.

Thanks guys. I am more concerned with how they will be with the Orps. I don't need them to be super friendly to me. My orps tolerate me as long as there is food involved. That is good enough. I think I will give the Leg Bars a go.

At the moment I have my CLs penned with my Orpingtons. They get along just fine together. One of the Orps is my CL roo's current fav girl... The CLs are not as laid back as the Orps, but they are definitely not tyrants either.
