The Legbar Thread!

Aloha kakou,

I live n Kailua, O'ahu, Hawai'i.  Does anyone know a reputable breeder who can send cream legbar eggs to Hawai'i.  Or could we bring eggs on the plane from Los Angeles?  Mahalo nui, Puhi

It seems that i remember that https://www.backyardchickens.com/u/174275/ozexpat
Ozexpat took eggs in a suitcase to or from the Phillipines/California. You can private message him and see.

An update for the few that are interested

I have joined Aphis and Level 1 is approved and awaiting Level 2 approval

the cost of inspection at port is $80 per consignment of eggs so any amount can be brought in

once my level 2 is approved I will apply for the permit and then next year I should be able to bring in Eggs

Cost I have not determined yet but I think this will be great so that green fire chicks can be mated back to mine and help keep inbreeding at bay

although my goal is to breed 2 separate breed lines and sell eggs from both so that a single keeper can breed my birds back to each other without worry of inbreeding
i also would like to hear updates as you progress through all of the hoops. Would love to work with others on a possible group order in the future. Good luck !

Hi Brad:

I obtained NPIP certification so that I could ship to all 50 states, however, you need to do some research to see what is required by Hawaii for both shipper (seller) and recipient (you.)

Right now I am not selling CL eggs or chicks as my stock is still not where I want it to be quality-wise. My trio from Greenfire are not crested and someone is throwing wry tails. I also hatched two pullets from Jordan Farms eggs that are crested. Unfortunately I have been unable to obtain a better rooster and an egg order from NC was never rec'd (seller said he sent but I never rec'd. Promised a replacement and still waiting for it...or a refund. Six weeks later, still waiting.) Anyway, I decided to go ahead and set some of my eggs in spite of the flawed and limited gene pool and am keeping my fingers crossed that a few good ones to move forward with come out of the crested girls.

Next spring I SHOULD have improved stock and can send some eggs your way if you still want them.

What are you looking for in a better rooster? I have an imperfect 6 month old cockeral who still has some growing to do, but if he's better than yours you are welcome to him. I'll be going up to PA next week.

Aloha kakou,

I started off with a single Barred Rock hen who does not like other chickens. My friends had a rooster who looks like an araucana or something(green legs though) and he was making trouble at their house, crowing like crazy, bullying everyone around. So they had to get rid of it. I figured Henny Lo needed a challenge and a boyfriend, so we put him in there. They looked at each other for two minutes then started to fight. Pepe le Roo was ontop of Henny Lo pecking at her comb. Didn't look good. But Henny Lo is mean and shrewd and she came back at Pepe and did something that made Pepe Le Roo hide his head in the corner while she pecked at him! Now we know who's boss.
He gave a few crows the next morning then the next I was there and hassled him when he did it(no major physical abuse, but maybe some mental abuse). No crows for the rest of the day. Two the next day and none since.

Not that I really want them to breed but my question is, do you think they're mating? Would Henny Lo release some kind of pheromone that would make Pepe Le Roo forget his fear and go for it? Just wondering.

Kden, I hope you liked the story.

Aloha,

What do you guys think about the crest on the head of some cream legbars? It seems that the UK standard does not include the crest. Either way, I like it but could it signify a mixing with some other bird? Perhaps the blue egg gene is still there, but maybe the egg proliferation or some other gene is not. The legbars developed by Punnet were supposed to be prolific egg layers. Are the US CLBs prolific as well? Any there other possible differences? If not, I think the crest is a great feature of the CLB.

kden, puhi
