The Legbar Thread!

A pic of my little girlie... the first from my eggs!
Congrats! I love your chick!!

She has that quintessential "-I'm a Cream Legbar and hence a very classy chicken - in fact, nearly royalty, but I'm low-key so I'm acting like an ordinary chicken for now " kind of look IMO.

WOW, she is so beautiful and plump. How old is she in this picture? 2/3 days?
X2 and her down looks so smooth and sleek - not ruff and fluffed. (I had one that I named 'Mattie' because her down was kind of, well matted. Of course, it is all normal feathering out now---but never as sleek as your chick's.

@ChicKat just curious what happened with Comet, Donder and Vixen. I was studying their growth charts and seemed like they were performing even better than my Light Brahmas. Weighing more than a pound at 5 weeks is outstanding. Were you feeding them something special or a different feed than you normally do? Its just remarkable.

Thank you! She is adorable! ...yes 3 days old in the pic she was the first of the batch to pip n zip and was all sweet n shiny before the others even popped out.

Hi Junibutt---

Somewhere, someone said that 'winter chicks grow bigger' -- they were all hatched on Christmas or the day after. I have never seen growth like that in Chicks. Part of it I attribute to the Manna Pro Chick Starter (medicated is what I always use)---- I hadn't used Manna Pro before this, I think - and they just grew like crazy! Although the chicks were really healthy and growers...I got in a pinch for space - and I didn't see them as breeders..so I did process them.

Now that yellow bag from Manna Pro is all I use - and all the chicks are growing maniacs. -- The ones that hatched Monday are double in size I think...(my tiny scale isn't here it has yet to be moved) The ones that hatched at Easter-- I kicked out of the brooder to make way for these---and they are now the big (little) chicks. I put weights in for Morgan & Corrigan... didn't have egg-scale here - so I had to wait until they showed up on the big scale--

I saw the weights for Morgan and Corrigan and although they are healthy they are no where close to your earlier chicks. Maybe they were mutated giants! lol.
BTW do you know of anyone close to Chicago who sells either Legbar, Rhode-bar or BLRW or Chocolate/Blue Orpington hatching eggs. I found someone from the Legbar directory in Michigan but they are a) double the price of market and b) don't have enough eggs. Just for reference they are selling a Legbar egg for $10/egg plus shipping vs, the ones I purchased were $5/egg.

Wish I did know of someone. Yep $10.00 for shipped egg is a lot. Too bad you aren't near me. I have extra chicks...
You may find some decent ones on Craigs list...but its a real buyer beware type of thing.

Sunday will be week 4 for Corrigan & Morgan, I will have to weigh and compare. The friend that I bought eggs from at Christmas had a CL rooster that was seven pounds....my guy is just 5 1/2...but mine in that cohort was keeping pace up until the last weigh in that I did so, I'm glad that you pointed that out to my memory banks.

There was one 'bigger genetics' father in that bunch - and one father with these same genetics...and I haven't weighed all of these---just those two....and now I have another 8, and maybe some under a hen I'm trying to coach into going broody--she isn't even broody--but then with chickens and a big pile of eggs, you just never can tell.
