As far as them being a dime a dozen later, I thought I'd throw in a word. They might be in high demand locally if no one else has them. I inadvertently found out that there is a demand here for Orpingtons that are not Buff by putting my black orp roos on Craigslist. I got many emails from people wanting an Orpington that was any color but Buff. (Happily, someone from BYC ended up with them to use with their own lavenders - yay!) Someone around here also has lavenders that they are selling more of than they can furnish.
Houston is a large area and you can buy Buff Orpingtons at any feed store almost year round but BBS and Black are nowhere to be seen. I suspect the lavenders are selling so well not so much because they are lavender as it is that they are not Buff. Can't wait for my Black Orp girls to start laying! They are 4 months old now so I have another month or two to wait, and some nice lavender splits under a broody due to hatch next week.
So the point is, even if they are "a dime a dozen" nationally, there could be a nice market locally if you aren't planning on selling tons of them.
