Chapter Two
"What are these things?" I asked as I pecked at a round white thing.
"That's an egg, be careful with it!" Mommy told me.
"Why? What does it do?"
Polly rolled his eyes at me, "We hatched from egg, everyone hatch from eggs."
"Not everyone," Mommy corrected, "The humans don't."
"Humans is weird," Polly muttered.
I was fascinated, "How do we hatch? How do we get in?"
Mommy sighed, "You live in the egg and one day you peck your way out. I don't know how you got in."
I moved away from the egg and changed the subject, "Polly, why's your grammar so bad?"
Polly looked at me in annoyance and turned around.
"I wouldn't be talking, pinfeather."
I was insulted. My feathers were growing in just fine! I still couldn't tell what color they are, but...
"Well you're green and everyone knows blue budgies are better."
"Hey!" Mommy chirped playfully.
The box we were in was getting hot, humid, and miserable.
Seeming to have read my mind, Mommy said, "Don't worry, you two, you'll grow out of this box and have pretty feathers in no time," She turned towards me, "Meanwhile, you don't know what color you are yet, so it's not a good idea to criticize other budgies about theirs."
Hey! He called me pinfeather, and Mommy thinks saying he's green is a worse insult?
I sighed. I was tired of this box.
I stared at the eggs and wondered when they would hatch, if they would hatch at all.
How many brothers and sisters would I have? The world would be lonely if I only had Polly. He was nice, but he could be grumpy like how he is now.
I heard a small sound. What was it?
"Mommy, do you hear that?" but she had left the box. Lucky!
I managed to find where it was coming from... the egg! Maybe I wouldn't be the smallest after all!
