Chapter Four

The eggs kept hatching, and I was sick of it. I didn't like being crowded in the box and I didn't like hearing the babies whine any more.
One day, Polly told mommy what I've never dared to say.
"Why do we have to stay in this box? It's stinky and crowded with crybabies!"
"You don't," Mommy told him.
"Really?!?!"
"Not for much longer, at least," Mommy spoke with some secrecy.
"What do you mean?" Polly was inpatient to know.
"You'll be fledging soon."
Polly stood staring at mommy.
"Fledging means you'll be leaving the nest," Mommy quickly explained.
"Oh... will I be able to fly?" Polly asked hopefully. I knew he wanted to know how to fly, but was slightly scared of it.
"I don't know, but you'll have to," Mommy replied grimly.
"Thanks, mom!" Polly was calling "Mommy" "Mom". What was the difference? Should I call her that too?
I nervously hopped up to him.
"Hi Polly," I chirped.
"Oh, hi."
"Why did you call Mommy Mom?" I blurted out.
"It's what the big chicks do."
"Do I count?" I was afraid.
"Are you as big as me?"
"I guess not."
"There you go."
But I really wanted to be big. I wanted to fledge too! I wanted to go out there and fly.
Mommy squirmed out of the tiny nest box and flew over to be with Sky in a corner.
I. Want. To. Fly.
Without thinking, I crawled out of the box when no one was looking. Sky heard me flutter awkwardly to the ground, and looked, but I had carefully hid behind the giant cuttlebone.
I guess I'm officially fledged!
