Chapter Fifteen

Both Pepper and I woke up bright and early the next morning for part three of our plan.
"All right, Pepper, are you ready? Today's the day you should be getting adopted!" I chirped excitedly.
"Well, this is all happening very quickly, but I guess I am." She said nervously.
"Great! Now, repeat what I say."
"Um... Ok?"
"I talk!" I said, I was teaching her this so she can prove that she can read to the humans by reading the piece of wood on my cage.
"Eye tawk!"
"Not bad! Keep working on it!"
Pepper practiced for the rest of the morning, and finally got it. When she did, I chirped, "Ok, Pepper, the big moment, you will do your routine, and win over a human. Remember, don't be nervous, just pretend you're just practicing again!"
Pepper shifted nervously
"Oh, and raise your crest to catch their attention," I informed her
Pepper's crest slowly went up.
"All right, now do your thing!"
After practicing quietly a few times to herself, Pepper looked up at the humans, and did a perfect bell imitation.
Good good good!
Then, Pepper lowered and lifted her crest, and said, "I can read," In a voice that was loud, yet clear as a bell.
I was ecstatic, but I can only imagine what Pepper was feeling.
A few humans gathered around to watch her.
"I can read " Pepper repeated, then looked over at my cage, looked into my eyes for a second, then at the piece of wood, "I talk!" she read.
The humans muttered something among themselves
My mind somehow wandered to my former home and to Sky. What we argued about didn't seem important at all now. It even seemed stupid.
The most scary thing was that I never said bye, and that toys don't matter as much as our companionship.
I drifted back to the real world, sad and lonely.
"I can read," Pepper emphasized more.
The humans seemed to argue about something, then ran off.
"Where are they going?" Pepper asked me sadly.
"I don't know. I really don't know," I answered.
