Chapter Sixteen

It has been a few minutes since the humans ran off. Pepper and I are puffed up. We're sitting on our perches miserably.
"I'm sorry, Pepper," I finally managed to say.
"Don't be. It wasn't your fault. I will always be the untalented, plain bird I am today," Pepper muttered.
"You're not! You have AMAZING talent!"
"You're just saying that. You don't really mean it."
"I do mean it! How many birds know how to read and can pick up words as fast as you?" I challenged.
"You're too nice."
"No, I just seem like that because you're not nice enough to yourself."
She just sighed, "There's no point in cheering me up."
The image of Sky once again flashed in my mind. No! I can't let that happen again!
"Pepper!" I cried urgently.
"What? What is it?" Pepper seemed alarmed, and drew in her feathers.
I realized that I had nothing to say. Suddenly the crowd of humans came running back.
"The humans are back!"
"They are!" Pepper seemed really happy, but then her happiness faded, "It might not be for me."
"No, it is! See, they're pointing at you!" I paused, "But why are they still arguing?"
One of the humans who worked there came in to our side of the glass. A metal box sat there waiting for her. She reached in, and took out a piece of flat wood humans squiggle on. All the humans outside quieted.
"And the winner of this lovely bird is... Um... you!" She pointed to one of the humans waiting outside, "Sorry, I don't know how to say your name..."
The other humans began to blabber to themselves again. One of them, a female, came into our room, and set a cardboard box besides our cages.
"The box!" I yelled, "You're getting adopted, Pepper!"
"I AM???" Pepper trilled, "I AM!!!! I'M FINALLY GETTING ADOPTED!"
"I hope you don't mind," The humans continued chatting, "but the rescue center has to keep the cages, in case we find a bird without one."
"Oh, I don't!" The other said, excited.
Sky continued to haunt me. A sense of urgency did, too.
"Pepper! Pepper!" I screamed, "Wait!"
"What, Apple, what is it?"
Awkwardly, I chirped, "I just wanted to say goodbye."
"Goodbye, Apple! Good luck!" She chirped
"Bye!"
And she was taken away.
